What is muhurta — and why does your birth chart matter?

Muhurta is the Vedic science of electional astrology — choosing the most auspicious moment to begin an important action. A generic shubh muhurat calendar uses only the universal quality of a time (tithi, nakshatra, vara) and is the same for everyone on the same day. A personalised muhurta goes further: it checks whether the proposed moment is also favourable for your natal chart specifically— from your lagna, your Moon sign and your running Vimshottari daśā.

The 16 questions above let you check specific proposed dates against your chart — for a marriage date, a property registration day, an interview, surgery or business launch. Enter your birth details once to access personalised muhurta analysis.

The four factors of a muhurta

Tithi

The lunar day — the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Certain tithis are favourable for specific activities; the 4th, 8th, 14th and new-moon day are generally avoided for auspicious starts.

Nakṣatra

The Moon's position in one of the 27 lunar mansions is one of the most important muhurta factors. Fixed nakshatras suit permanent acts (marriage, building); movable nakshatras suit travel and new ventures.

Vara

The weekday ruled by a planet. Sunday (Sun) and Tuesday (Mars) are strong for authority and action; Wednesday (Mercury) for contracts; Thursday (Jupiter) for education and blessings; Friday (Venus) for relationships.

Personal Chart

Generic muhurta tables give one calendar for everyone. A personalised muhurta checks whether the chosen moment is also favourable from your own natal chart — lagna, Moon sign and running dasha.

Muhurta — common questions

What is muhurta in Vedic astrology?+

Muhurta is the science of electional astrology — choosing the best moment to begin an important action. A muhurta is considered auspicious when the tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (Moon's star), vara (weekday), lagna (rising sign at that moment) and yoga (Sun-Moon combination) are all favourable for that type of activity. The classical texts give different nakshatras and tithis as best for different events — marriage, property purchase, travel, business launch and so on.

How is a personalised muhurta different from a general calendar?+

A general muhurta calendar picks auspicious dates based on the lunar calendar alone — it is the same for everyone born on the same day. A personalised muhurta additionally checks: (1) is the proposed moment free of malefic transits over your natal Moon or lagna; (2) does the running dasha support this type of event; (3) is the proposed lagna (rising sign at the chosen time) well-disposed from your natal ascendant. These three personal checks can make a 'good' calendar date bad for your chart, or validate a seemingly neutral date.

Which weekday is best for starting a business?+

Wednesday (Mercury's day — trade, communication, commerce) and Thursday (Jupiter's day — expansion, blessings, prosperity) are classically preferred for business starts. Friday (Venus — partnerships, luxury trade) can also be good for consumer-facing ventures. Tuesday (Mars) and Sunday (Sun) suit government registration, authority-related businesses or action-requiring launches. Monday (Moon) suits public-facing, hospitality and water-related businesses.

Is Rahu Kala always bad for muhurta?+

Rahu Kala is an 90-minute window each weekday when Rahu's influence is strong. Starting important activities during Rahu Kala is generally avoided in classical muhurta — Rahu creates unpredictability, sudden disruptions and things that seem to start well but end unexpectedly. However, if Rahu is the beneficial yogakaraka for your lagna (e.g. Rahu in Gemini for Aquarius lagna) or the activity itself involves Rahu's themes (technology, foreign markets, media), some authorities permit it.

What is the best nakshatra for marriage?+

The classical list of marriage nakshatras: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and Anuradha are particularly auspicious. Avoid Bharani, Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Mula and Shravana for marriage. A Thursday or Friday with a waxing Moon and a benefic lagna at the marriage moment is ideal.

Can I check if a specific date is auspicious for me?+

Yes — the tool above includes questions that let you check whether a proposed date for an exam, interview, surgery, property signing or travel is auspicious for your chart specifically. Enter the date and the tool checks it against your natal chart: the running dasha, the Moon's nakshatra on that day, the tithi, and whether any malefic transits fall over your key natal positions.
