What Manglik dosha is — and when it actually matters
Manglik dosha (also Kuja or Mangal dosha) is held to arise when Mars — the fiery graha of energy and force — sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus. In these positions Mars is said to strain the marriage, the spouse's well-being, or the peace of the home. Read mechanically, it is badly over-diagnosed: across 20,000 charts born 1950–2010, three in four show Mars in a Manglik house from at least one of the three points, but after the classical cancellations only 2% carry it strongly. This check lists every hit and every cancellation from all three reference points, so you see the real balance rather than a bare yes or no.
The dosha houses — and why each one counts
| Mars in the… | Why it strains the marriage |
|---|---|
| 1st house | Mars here charges the native with a sharp, forceful temperament that the marriage must absorb. |
| 2nd house | The house of family and speech — Mars can bring friction into the home and married household. |
| 4th house | Domestic peace and the mother's house; Mars unsettles the emotional ground of home life. |
| 7th house | The house of the spouse itself — the most direct seat of the dosha, straining the partner. |
| 8th house | Longevity and the marital bond; Mars here touches the well-being of the spouse. |
| 12th house | The bed-pleasures and losses; Mars can drain the comfort and intimacy of marriage. |
Counted from three points — the Lagna (body and self), the Moon (mind), and Venus (spouse) — so a Mars that troubles the marriage from any angle is caught.
How the dosha is cancelled or reduced
A technical dosha is not a verdict. These are the conditions the calculator checks, and it reports each one it finds in your chart. Beyond them, a strong 7th house, its lord and Venus make any remaining dosha matter less — that is read in the full compatibility, not scored here.
| Cancellation / reduction | Effect |
|---|---|
| Mars in Leo or Aquarius | No Manglik arises from any house. This overrides every house position. |
| Mars in its own sign or exalted | Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn in the birth chart — the dosha is strongly reduced. |
| Mars strong in the navāṁśa | Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn in the D9 reduces it further. |
| Mars with Jupiter | Mars and Jupiter in the same sign — the dosha is fully countered. |
| Mars with the Moon | Mars and the Moon in the same sign — the dosha is fully countered. |
| Sign exceptions for each house | 1st: Aries, Leo, Aquarius · 2nd: Gemini, Virgo · 4th: Aries, Scorpio · 7th: Cancer, Capricorn · 8th: Sagittarius, Pisces · 12th: Taurus, Libra. Mars in the listed sign in that house is reduced. |
| Both partners Manglik | In a match the two doshas balance — the partner check shows this. |
Frequently asked questions
Am I Manglik? How do I check?
Enter your date, time and place of birth above. The calculator counts Mars from your ascendant (Lagna), your Moon and Venus; if Mars falls in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from any of them the dosha is present, and it then applies every classical cancellation and tells you what is left — none, mild, moderate or strong.
What is Manglik (Kuja / Mangal) dosha?
Manglik dosha, also called Kuja or Mangal dosha — chevvai dosham in Tamil, kuja dosham in Telugu — arises when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house counted from the Lagna, the Moon or Venus. Mars is fiery and forceful, and in these houses it is held to strain the marriage, the spouse's well-being or the peace of the home.
How common is Manglik dosha?
Far more common than the fear around it suggests. We ran this check over 20,000 charts born between 1950 and 2010 at Indian latitudes: 74% have Mars in a Manglik house from at least one of the three points, and 42% from the ascendant alone. After the classical cancellations, 55% still carry it — 36% mild, 17% moderate, and only 2% strong.
Why check from Lagna, Moon and Venus?
The Lagna shows the body and self, the Moon the mind and emotional life, and Venus is the significator of the spouse. Mars in a dosha house from any of them carries weight, so the check counts all three and weighs them — the Lagna most, then the Moon, then Venus — rather than giving a bare yes or no from one point.
Can Manglik dosha be cancelled?
Yes, and very often it is. Mars in Leo or Aquarius produces none at all; Mars in its own sign or exaltation, strong in the navāṁśa, or in the same sign as Jupiter or the Moon reduces or removes it; specific signs in each house are exceptions; and when both partners are Manglik the two balance. The calculator lists each one it finds in your chart.
Does Manglik dosha end at 28?
The idea comes from the age at which Mars is said to mature. No classical cancellation ends the dosha at an age, and this check does not apply one: it reads the placement, which does not change. What changes with time is the daśā — a Mars period brings the dosha forward, other periods let it recede.
Two Manglik people — is that a good match?
In the classical view, when both partners carry the dosha it cancels between them, and this is considered one of the safest ways to marry a Manglik. The partner check on this page reads both charts and gives a balance verdict rather than flagging one side in isolation.
Do I need my exact birth time?
The ascendant count depends on it — the ascendant changes about every two hours. The Moon and Venus counts hold up with a rougher time. If your time is uncertain, correct it first from your own life events with the birth-time rectification tool.
