Your Moon sign (janma rāśi)
The sign the Moon was in when you were born — not the rāśi from the first letter of your name.
What Sade Sati is
Sade Sati — sāḍhe sātī, “seven and a half” — is Saturn's passage through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs counted from your natal Moon. Saturn takes about two and a half years over each sign, so the three together run for roughly seven and a half years. The Moon is the mind, and Saturn crossing it and the two signs on either side is felt as weight: things take longer, cost more and ask for more patience than you had planned.
It is not a curse and not a single event. It is a long stretch in which Saturn — the planet of time, labour and consequence — sits on the part of the chart that registers comfort. What it takes away is usually what was not built on work; what survives it is usually what was.
The three phases
| Phase | Saturn from the Moon | What it presses on |
|---|---|---|
| Rising phase | 12th (first ḍhaiyā) | Expense, loss, sleep, distant places and withdrawal. Money goes out faster than it comes in; old supports fall away. |
| Peak phase | 1st (janma Śani) | The body and the mind themselves. Fatigue, low spirits, health that needs attention, a sense of being tested personally. |
| Setting phase | 2nd (last ḍhaiyā) | Family, savings, speech and food. Strain in the household, money held back, words that cost more than they should. |
The peak — Saturn over the Moon itself — is usually the heaviest. When Saturn turns retrograde it can slip back a sign and cross the same boundary two or three times, so a phase can start, pause for a few months and resume. The calculator lists every crossing.

Ḍhaiyā — Saturn in the 4th and 8th from the Moon
Outside Sade Sati, two other Saturn transits are watched from the Moon. In the 4th — Ardhāṣṭama or Kaṇṭaka Śani — Saturn sits on home, mother, vehicles and peace of mind. In the 8th — Aṣṭama Śani — it sits on health, longevity and sudden obstacles, and is the harder of the two. Each lasts about two and a half years; in Hindi both are called Śani kī Ḍhaiyā.
The pāya (Mūrti) of each phase
Every time Saturn enters a sign, the transiting Moon's position counted from your natal Moon grades that transit. The same Saturn entry can be gold for one Moon sign and iron for another.
| Pāya | Transit Moon from natal Moon | How the phase lands |
|---|---|---|
| Gold (Svarṇa) | 1st, 6th, 11th | the lightest — results come with the least damage |
| Silver (Rajata) | 2nd, 5th, 9th | mild — pressure without breaking |
| Copper (Tāmra) | 3rd, 7th, 10th | mixed — some loss, some gain |
| Iron (Loha) | 4th, 8th, 12th | the heaviest — the full weight of the transit |
Why two people with the same Moon sign have different Sade Satis
The dates above are the same for everyone born with the Moon in a sign. What happens in them is not. Four things decide it:
- Which houses Saturn rules from your ascendant. For Vṛṣabha (Taurus) and Tulā (Libra) ascendants Saturn is the yogakāraka, the best planet in the chart; for Makara and Kumbha it rules the ascendant itself. For others it rules difficult houses and its pressure is harder to use.
- Saturn's strength at birth — its sign, its divisional-chart dignity, whether it is retrograde. A strong Saturn in transit tends to give through effort; a weak one takes.
- The daśā running at the time. A Sade Sati that falls in a good major period is felt as hard work; the same transit in a difficult one is felt as loss.
- The pāya and vedha of each phase — the grading above, and whether another planet obstructs the transit.
The transit reading shows Saturn's transit on your own chart with its pāya and vedha, and your birth chart shows where Saturn sits and what it rules.
What to do in Sade Sati
Saturn rewards steady work and exposes shortcuts. The period asks for exactly what Saturn signifies: do the duty in front of you, carry the weight without complaint, and stop clinging to the result — “you have a right to your work, never to its fruits” (Bhagavad Gītā 2.47). In the tradition Saturn is the Kūrma avatāra of Viṣṇu, the tortoise who held the mountain steady on his back; remembering the Lord in that form, and offering the work to Him, is the remedy that fits the planet.
Questions
What is Sade Sati?
Sade Sati (sāḍhe sātī, 'seven and a half') is the period when Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs counted from your natal Moon. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so the three together take roughly seven and a half years. The Moon is the mind, and Saturn passing over it and its two neighbours is felt as weight: delay, responsibility, loss of comfort and hard lessons.
Which Moon signs have Sade Sati right now?
Saturn is in Mīna (Pisces) from 29 Mar 2025 to 2 Jun 2027. In that span Sade Sati runs for Meṣa (Aries), Mīna (Pisces), Kumbha (Aquarius) Moon signs — the rising, peak and setting phases in that order. Aṣṭama Śani runs for Siṁha (Leo) and Ardhāṣṭama Śani for Dhanus (Sagittarius).
Should I use my Moon sign or the rashi from my name?
Your Moon sign at birth — the janma rāśi. Sade Sati is Saturn's position counted from the natal Moon; the rāśi that goes with the first letter of your name is a naming convention and says nothing about where your Moon was. If you do not know your Moon sign, enter your birth details and the calculator finds it.
Is Sade Sati always bad?
No. It is always a period of pressure, but what the pressure produces depends on your chart. Where Saturn rules good houses from your ascendant — it is the best planet of all for Vṛṣabha (Taurus) and Tulā (Libra) ascendants — and is strong at birth, Sade Sati often brings the heaviest responsibilities and the most lasting achievements of a life. Where Saturn is weak and rules difficult houses, the losses of the period are felt fully. The daśā running at the time decides how much of it lands.
What is Ḍhaiyā, Kaṇṭaka Śani and Aṣṭama Śani?
Ḍhaiyā ('two and a half') is Saturn's transit of the 4th or the 8th from the natal Moon, about two and a half years each. Saturn in the 4th from the Moon is called Ardhāṣṭama or Kaṇṭaka Śani and presses on home, peace of mind and vehicles; Saturn in the 8th is Aṣṭama Śani, the harder of the two, touching health, obstacles and sudden trouble.
What is the pāya of Sade Sati?
The pāya, or Mūrti, grades each Saturn transit by where the transiting Moon stood, counted from your natal Moon, at the moment Saturn entered the sign: gold (1st, 6th or 11th), silver (2nd, 5th or 9th), copper (3rd, 7th or 10th) or iron (4th, 8th or 12th). Gold is the lightest and iron the heaviest. Each phase has its own pāya, and the calculator shows it.
How many times does Sade Sati come in a lifetime?
Saturn goes round the zodiac in about 29½ years, so Sade Sati returns every 22 to 23 years after the last one ended. Most people meet it two or three times; a long life can hold four.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Only the Moon sign is needed. The Moon changes sign every two and a quarter days, so your date of birth is usually enough — the birth time matters only if the Moon changed sign on the day you were born.
