Health astrology — reading disease and vitality from your chart

In Vedic astrology, health is read primarily from the lagna (the ascendant and its lord — the body itself), the 6th house (disease and chronic conditions), and the 8th house (longevity, surgery and sudden health events). Each planet maps to specific body organs and systems, so an afflicted planet shows vulnerability in its domain. The running Vimshottari daśā tells you when that vulnerability is most likely to activate.

The 18 health questions above are answered personalised to your own birth chart — which conditions to watch for, when to be careful, your Āyurvedic prakriti, and the best timing for medical procedures.

What the chart reads for health

Lagna & Lagna Lord

The ascendant and its lord represent the physical body itself. Their strength, affliction and the planets aspecting the lagna set the baseline constitution.

6th House

Primary house of disease, illness and health challenges. Malefics here can indicate chronic conditions; the 6th lord's nature shows the type of ailment.

8th House

The 8th house governs longevity, accidents, surgery and sudden health events. Afflictions to the 8th house or its lord signal critical periods.

Planet Karakas

Each planet signifies body parts: Sun (eyes, heart, bones), Moon (mind, fluids, lungs), Mars (blood, muscles), Saturn (chronic illness, nerves), Rāhu (toxins, unexplained conditions).

Āyurvedic body type (Prakriti) from your chart

Vedic astrology and Āyurveda share the same planetary foundation. The three doṣas — Vāta, Pitta and Kapha — map directly to the planets ruling your lagna and the strength of your Moon:

Vāta (Wind)

Planets: Saturn / Rāhu

Nervous system, joints, skin dryness, anxiety, irregular digestion, insomnia

Pitta (Fire)

Planets: Sun / Mars

Inflammation, fever, liver, acidity, skin rashes, anger-related conditions

Kapha (Water)

Planets: Moon / Jupiter / Venus

Congestion, weight, respiratory, slow metabolism, emotional eating, water retention

Health astrology — common questions

Which house governs health in Vedic astrology?+

Three houses govern health. The 1st house (lagna) represents the physical body and vitality — its strength or weakness sets the constitution. The 6th house governs disease and illness — planets here and its lord show the nature of health challenges. The 8th house governs longevity, accidents and surgery. An afflicted lagna lord, malefics in the 6th or 8th, and weak planets ruling body-part significators all indicate areas of concern.

How does Vedic astrology determine Ayurvedic body type?+

Āyurvedic prakriti (body constitution) is derived from the lagna lord, the Moon sign and strong planets in the lagna. A Sun- or Mars-dominated chart inclines toward Pitta (fire); Moon, Jupiter or Venus dominance gives Kapha (water-earth); Saturn or Rāhu dominance gives Vāta (air). The exact blend comes from all three: lagna sign, Moon sign and the strongest planet influencing the ascendant.

Can astrology predict which diseases I am prone to?+

Yes — Vedic astrology maps each planet to body systems: the Sun governs the heart, eyes and bones; the Moon governs the mind, uterus and fluids; Mars governs blood, muscles and inflammation; Mercury governs the nervous system and skin; Jupiter governs liver and fat; Venus governs kidneys and reproductive system; Saturn governs chronic conditions, teeth and joints; Rāhu governs mysterious or unexplained illness. An afflicted planet in a natal chart signals vulnerability in its body domain.

What is the best time for surgery according to astrology?+

Avoid surgery during daśās of the 8th lord or Māraka (2nd and 7th lord) unless unavoidable. Also avoid surgery on the Moon's nakshatra day (Janma nakshatra), during a waning Moon, or when Mars transits the 1st or 8th house from the natal Moon. Favourable surgery windows are when Jupiter aspects the lagna or Moon, and a benefic daśā runs for the operative lord. The Muhurta tool can check whether a specific date is auspicious.

How does astrology assess mental health?+

Mental health is primarily the Moon's domain — the Moon rules the mind (manas). An afflicted Moon (in Scorpio or Capricorn, aspected by Saturn, Mars or Rāhu) can cause anxiety, depression or emotional instability. Mercury's affliction affects logical thinking, speech and nervous conditions. The 5th house (chitta — consciousness) and 12th house (isolation) also contribute. Benefic aspects from Jupiter to the Moon or lagna are protective for mental wellbeing.
