Children astrology — the 5th house, Jupiter and Saptamsha
In Vedic astrology, children are read primarily from the 5th house — the house of progeny, conception and children's personality — and its lord's strength. Jupiter is the natural significator (kāraka) of children for all charts. The Saptamsha (D7) divisional chart dedicates itself exclusively to children and grandchildren, adding a layer of precision that the natal chart alone cannot give.
The 9 questions above are answered personalised to your birth chart — conception timing, how many children are indicated, whether delays are shown and what the running daśā says about the next fertile window.
What the chart reads for children
👶
5th House
Primary house of children, progeny and conception. Its lord, planets inside it, and aspects to it determine the promise of children and their nature.
♃
Jupiter
Natural significator of children for all charts. Jupiter's strength, placement and daśā timing are always checked for children-related questions.
PK
Putra Kāraka
In Jaimini astrology, the 5th-ranking Chara Kāraka is the Putra Kāraka — the planet indicating children. Its D1 and D7 (Saptamsha) placement refines the reading.
D7
D7 Saptamsha
The divisional chart dedicated to children and grandchildren. Planets strong in D7 deliver children-related results even when the natal 5th house is afflicted.

Children astrology — common questions
Which house in astrology governs children?+
The 5th house is the primary house of children and progeny. Its lord, planets placed in the 5th, and aspects to the 5th cusp determine the timing, number and nature of children. Jupiter is the natural significator (kāraka) of children for all charts. The Saptamsha (D7) divisional chart is specifically dedicated to children and provides additional detail.
What causes delay in having children in astrology?+
Delay in children (Putra Doṣa) is indicated by: the 5th lord in a dusthana (6th, 8th or 12th house); Saturn or Rāhu in the 5th house afflicting it; Jupiter debilitated or in an enemy sign; the 5th house under strong papakatari yoga (flanked by malefics); or the D7 chart showing similar afflictions. Running an unfavourable daśā during the prime years compounds the delay. Neecha Bhanga (debilitation cancellation) and Jupiter's aspect can mitigate these.
Can astrology predict the gender of a child?+
Traditional Vedic texts give rules for son/daughter prediction based on the sign of the 5th house (odd signs → son, even signs → daughter), the stronger of the 5th lord vs its sign dispositor, and the Moon's nakshatra at conception. These are broad tendencies, not certainties, and modern astrologers treat them as probability indicators rather than fixed outcomes.
What is the Saptamsha (D7) and how is it used?+
The Saptamsha is the seventh divisional chart in Vedic astrology, specifically dedicated to children and grandchildren. Each sign is divided into 7 equal parts. Strong planets in the D7 lagna, D7 5th house or D7 Jupiter indicate robust children's promise. An afflicted D7 — even with a good natal 5th house — can still cause delays or difficulties with children. For confirmed timing of first child, the Saptamsha and the Vimshottari daśā are read together.
Which daśā is best for having children?+
Children typically arrive in daśās or antardaśās of: Jupiter (universal children's significator), the 5th lord, the Putra Kāraka (5th Chara Kāraka), or planets placed in the 5th house. A Jupiter transit over the natal 5th cusp or the 5th lord's sign can also trigger pregnancy, especially when the daśā already supports it.
