Vimala Yoga — do you have it, and is it the clean form?

Updated 28 Aug 2026

Vimala Yoga is the Vipareeta Rāja yoga of the 12th house — formed when a lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th occupies the 12th.

The 12th is loss, expenditure and dissolution, so the reversal here works on the one thing everybody notices: money going out.

How Vimala Yoga forms

ConditionRequirement
The houseThe 12th house (12th)
The occupantThe lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th placed in the 12th house
Cleanest formThat lord accompanied only by other dusthāna lords
ContaminationA benefic or trine lord joining it weakens the yoga — that graha takes the damage instead of dealing it

Why the 12th house lord in the 12th house helps you

The 12th house is a dusthāna — it governs loss, expenditure, confinement and dissolution. Its lord carries those significations wherever it goes, and in most placements that is a liability: the graha exports the 12th house's trouble into whatever house it lands in.

Place it back in a dusthāna and the export has nowhere harmful to go. The graha's capacity to damage is aimed at ground that was already adverse, and the result is that losses do not accumulate, expenditure stays proportionate, and what is given up turns out to have been worth giving up.

Vipareeta means reversed, and the reversal is precise: this is not a benefic combination that happens to involve difficult houses. It is difficulty consuming itself. That is why the classical results for these three yogas read as much like things that fail to happen to the native as like things that do.

The condition throughout is company. The reversal is cleanest when the 12th lord sits with only other dusthāna lords. A benefic or a trine lord joining it contaminates the combination — that graha is not adverse, so it absorbs the damage instead of directing it.

What Vimala Yoga gives

The classical result gives independence, frugality, respectable conduct and contentment — a person of good character who is well regarded and not dependent on others.

The financial reading is the practical one. The 12th governs expenditure; a dusthāna lord turned against it reads as loss that does not accumulate. Vimala charts are characteristically not extravagant, and money that leaves tends to leave for reasons that turn out to be sound.

The spiritual reading runs alongside and is equally classical. The 12th is also mokṣa, and a 12th house whose difficulty has been reversed is a house of release working cleanly — which is why Vimala appears in discussions of renunciation as often as in discussions of expenditure.

How this check works

Your chart is computed from an astronomical ephemeris on the Lahiri (Citrapakṣa) ayanāṁśa, and the formation rule stated on this page is tested against it directly — the same rule, not a paraphrase. Where the classical texts disagree about a condition, the page names the reading we follow.

Frequently asked questions

What is Vimala Yoga?

The Vipareeta Rāja yoga of the 12th house, formed when a lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th occupies the 12th house.

What does Vimala Yoga give?

Independence, frugality, respectable conduct and contentment. Practically it reads as loss that does not accumulate — expenditure kept in check, and money that leaves for reasons that prove sound.

Is Vimala Yoga spiritual?

It has a genuine spiritual reading, because the 12th is mokṣa as well as loss. A 12th house whose difficulty has been reversed is a house of release working cleanly, which is why Vimala appears in classical discussions of renunciation.

How is Vimala different from Harsha and Sarala?

Only in the house. Harṣa is the 6th and gives victory over opposition and physical resilience; Sarala is the 8th and gives longevity and fearlessness; Vimala is the 12th and gives independence, frugality and release. The underlying reversal is identical.

Does having this yoga guarantee the result?

No. A yoga is a promise, and a promise still has to be delivered by a graha capable of delivering it. The classical texts are explicit that a yoga gives its full effect only when the planets forming it are unblemished — not combust, not hemmed by malefics, not debilitated. Most yogas also fruit during the daśā of the planets that form them rather than continuously; the Nābhasa yogas are the stated exception, and their own pages say so.

Which chart is the yoga checked in?

The Rāśi (D-1) chart, which is where the classical definitions are stated. A yoga present in the D-1 and unsupported in the relevant divisional chart is a promise that tends not to ripen, so it is worth checking the varga for the matter concerned.
