Dasha prediction — the Vedic timing system explained
Vimshottari Dasha is Vedic astrology's primary timing system — a 120-year cycle of planetary periods that determines when natal chart promises activate. The period's ruling planet colours every area of life for years at a time. Understanding your current Mahadasha (main period) and Antardasha (sub-period) is the single most important key to Vedic timing prediction.
The 6 timing questions above are answered from your birth chart — which period is running, what it means for your life's key areas, and when the next important transition arrives.

Dasha timing — common questions
What is Vimshottari Dasha and how does it work?+
Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic astrology. It divides a human lifespan of 120 years into planetary periods ruled by each of the nine planets. The starting point is determined by the Moon's nakshatra at birth — the balance of the period of the nakshatra lord remaining at birth determines which dasha you begin life in. Each main period (Mahadasha) has sub-periods (Antardasha) and finer sub-periods (Pratyantar, Sukshma) that together time events with remarkable precision.
How does my current Mahadasha affect my life?+
The Mahadasha lord colours the entire period with its natural significations and your chart-specific functional role. A Venus Mahadasha brings relationship, creativity and material focus for 20 years — but if Venus rules difficult houses for your lagna, it delivers those house results alongside its natural themes. The key is not just which planet runs but where it sits in your chart, what it owns, and how strong it is. The tool above checks all these factors for your current period.
Which dasha period will be the best in my life?+
The best period is typically the Mahadasha of the strongest benefic planet in your chart — usually the yogakaraka (a planet ruling both a kendra and a trikona), or a strong lagna lord. Jupiter Mahadasha is often positive for most lagnas; Venus Mahadasha brings material expansion; Sun Mahadasha strengthens authority and clarity. The specific 'best period' depends on your chart's unique configuration — what houses the dasha lord rules and its natal strength.
When will my current difficult period end?+
The end of a difficult period is determined by: the completion date of the current Mahadasha or challenging Antardasha, and when a more favourable sub-lord takes over. Saturn, Rāhu and Ketu daśās are often the most challenging for people whose charts have them unfavourably placed — but they always end. The tool reads your current period breakdown and shows the transition dates.
How are planetary transits different from dashas?+
Dashas are the primary timing system — they create the background 'season' for your life, running for years at a time. Planetary transits (gochara) are secondary — they create shorter-term weather patterns within the dasha season, lasting weeks to months. Both must align for a major event to occur. A positive dasha with an adverse transit might delay results briefly; a negative dasha with a positive transit gives short improvement but no major shift.
