What the classical texts say
These are among the bluntest verses in the chapter, and they are printed as they read.
If Saturn occupies the 8th, the native will suffer from leprosy and fistula in the anus, or pudendum, will have short life and will fail in his undertakings.
Saturn occupying the 8th house at birth will make the native unclean, afflicted with piles, devoid of wealth, of cruel disposition, hungry and will be avoided by his friends.
If malefics occupy various Bhāvas other than the 6th, 8th and 12th, they bring harm to the Bhāvas… Malefics are auspicious in evil Houses, i.e. 6th, 8th and 12th.
Both texts name the same region of the body and there is no reason to be delicate about it — piles, fistula and the lower digestive tract are what is being described, and they are the most literally reliable part of this placement. The longevity claim is the part that is genuinely disputed.
Short life or long life — how to settle it
Take the general rule over the particular verse, and here is why. Longevity in this system is never read from one planet's house position. It is judged from the 8th house, the lord of the 8th, and the Lagna lord together, and then confirmed by one of the classical longevity calculations. A verse about a single placement cannot outrank that method, and no responsible astrologer treats it as if it can.
What Saturn in the 8th reliably gives is not a short life but a slow one. The illnesses are chronic rather than acute — long-running, manageable, and rarely the thing that ends anything. The reverses are slow to arrive and slow to recover from. The whole 8th house, which normally deals in sudden events, gets stretched out and made gradual.
In practice this placement is more often found in people who outlive their contemporaries while complaining about their health the entire time. That is the honest summary, and it is very nearly the opposite of what the verse says.
What Saturn in the 8th house actually does
Health. Chronic conditions of the lower body — the digestion, the colon, the anus, the reproductive organs, the joints of the hips and legs. Both texts point at the same place. These respond to being managed early and badly to being ignored, which is exactly what people with this placement tend to do with them.
Money that is not yours. The 8th governs inheritance, the spouse's wealth, insurance, loans and other people's money. Saturn here delays all of it. Inheritance comes late, comes after a dispute, or comes reduced. Where it does come, it tends to be land or property rather than cash.
The mind. The 8th is where hidden things live, and Saturn gives a patient appetite for them. Research, investigation, medicine, forensic work, the occult, anything that means sitting for years with a question that has no easy answer. Some of the best researchers I have seen have this placement, and they all describe the same thing — a comfort with unresolved problems that other people find unbearable.
Reverses. They come, and they come slowly. The pattern is not the sudden collapse the 8th usually gives but a long erosion followed by a long rebuild. Sārāvalī's "will fail in his undertakings" is describing something real; what it misses is that the same planet rebuilds.
Being avoided. Phaladīpikā says friends keep away. The mechanism is usually the person's own withdrawal rather than anyone else's rejection — a heaviness in the manner that makes company hard work.
Saturn in the 8th house for each ascendant

Pisces is the best row: Saturn exalted in Libra, owning the 11th and 12th. Gemini and Cancer both put the 8th lord in the 8th, in its own sign — which is a genuine strength for longevity and, where the other house it owns is a trikona, a classical Vipārīta Rāja Yoga. Taurus and Libra get Saturn as yogakāraka here. Virgo is the weak row, with Saturn debilitated in Aries.
Which ascendants change the verdict
Gemini and Cancer ascendants both put Saturn in its own sign here, and both make it the lord of the 8th sitting in the 8th. A house lord in its own house holds that house up, and for the house of longevity that is a favourable thing to be able to say.
There is a further point worth making for Gemini. Saturn owns the 8th and the 9th from that lagna, and when the lord of a difficult house sits in a difficult house, the classical reading is often Vipārīta Rāja Yoga — a rise that comes through loss rather than in spite of it. That is a very different reading from the verse, and it is the correct one more often than people expect.
Pisces ascendant gets Saturn exalted in Libra, ruling the 11th and 12th. Gains and expenditure both routed through the 8th, exalted — this is the row most associated with money arriving from insurance, inheritance or a partner's resources.
Virgo ascendant is the row to check. Saturn is debilitated in Aries here and rules the 5th and 6th, so children and health are both involved. Look for cancellation of the debilitation before reading further.
What makes it better, and what makes it worse

- Gemini and Cancer ascendants. The lord in its own house. Strengthens longevity, and where the second house owned is a trikona it raises the Vipārīta Rāja Yoga question.
- The Trimśāṁśa (D-30)
- Illness and misfortune are judged there first. A hard-looking 8th house with a sound D-30 reads very differently from the same 8th with a broken one.
- Saturn with Rahu or Ketu here
- The version where the harsh reading applies most literally. Chronic conditions that resist diagnosis, and financial entanglements that take years to unwind.
- Mars aspecting the 8th
- Surgery. Where Saturn gives the chronic condition, Mars gives the operation that eventually deals with it — which is not always bad news.
When it shows up
The health pattern is lifelong and low-grade rather than event-driven; it surfaces during Saturn's own periods and during Saturn's transit over the 8th house.
The inheritance and other-people's-money side moves on the periods of the 8th lord and of the planets sitting with Saturn. These are usually the periods when a long-running property or family-money matter finally resolves.
Longevity itself is not read from daśās at all in the first instance — it is a separate calculation from the 8th house, its lord and the Lagna lord, and it should be done properly or not at all.
What actually helps
See a doctor about the things this page names, and see them early. The single most damaging habit of this placement is treating a chronic complaint as a personality trait for fifteen years.
Put the inheritance paperwork in order — wills, nominations, property records, insurance. Saturn in the 8th does not lose money; it loses money to delay and dispute, and both are preventable with documents.
Use the appetite for hidden things rather than fighting it. This placement is genuinely built for research and long investigation, and it is one of the few good things the 8th house hands out freely.
And push back against the withdrawal. The isolation here is self-imposed more often than not, and it compounds quietly across decades.
How much of this actually applies to you
The chapter these verses come from closes with its own warning, and it is the most useful line in it: by the strength of the planet, its friendships, the aspects on it and whether it sits exalted or fallen, the result can come out full, half, or not at all. So read the verse as the starting position, not the verdict. A well-placed planet keeps most of the good and sheds much of the harm. A wrecked one does the reverse.
