Saturn in the 6th house — the placement that wins by not leaving

Updated 28 Aug 2026 · From Sārāvalī and Phaladīpikā

Sārāvalī ends the chapter these verses come from with a rule that turns this page around before it starts: malefic planets harm the houses they sit in — except the 6th, the 8th and the 12th, where they are auspicious. The 6th is also an upachaya, one of the four houses where a hard planet grows into its position.

So the 6th is doubly suited to Saturn, and both texts show it. Read these two verses next to the ones for the 4th or 5th house and the difference in tone is unmistakable.

A placement is one factor among many. Its dignity, its lord, its varga and its daśā all have to agree before it delivers.

or every planet in every house

What the classical texts say

If Saturn occupies the 6th, the native will be very licentious, be beautiful, courageous, will eat abundantly, be crooked and will conquer many of his enemies.
Sārāvalī, Chapter 30
Should Saturn occupy the 6th house at birth, the person concerned will be glutton, wealthy and will vanquish his enemies. He will also be arrogant.
Phaladīpikā, Chapter 8

Both texts pair the victory with a character cost, and I am not going to translate that away. Sārāvalī says crooked and heavily sexed; Phaladīpikā says arrogant and greedy for food. This is a placement that wins its fights and is not always pleasant about it.

What Saturn in the 6th house actually does

Enemies. You outlast them. That is the whole mechanism and it is worth understanding rather than just enjoying. Saturn does not defeat an opponent by being stronger or cleverer; it defeats them by still being there when they have run out of money, attention or patience. People with this placement win long disputes, long court cases and long office wars, and they very rarely win short ones.

Debt and litigation. The 6th rules both. Saturn here is good at managing them and prone to accumulating them. Long loans, long cases, long obligations — all handled competently, all carried for years.

Service and work. The 6th is daily employment. Saturn here gives an unusual tolerance for routine, hierarchy and unpleasant working conditions. Common in people who stay twenty years in a job others could not last two in, and who end up indispensable because of it.

Health. Chronic rather than acute, and mostly managed. Saturn in the 6th is generally read as protective of longevity — it is a malefic in a malefic house, and the two cancel more than they compound. Digestion is strong, appetite is large, and weight is a real long-term issue. Both texts say the native eats a great deal, and both are right.

Appetite in general. Sārāvalī says licentious and means it — a strong and demanding sexual appetite is part of this placement, and it tends to be persistent rather than romantic. Say the same about the food and the acquisitiveness. The 6th is the house of consumption and Saturn does not know when to stop.

Saturn in the 6th house for each ascendant

The verse above describes Saturn in the 6th and stops there. But Saturn is not the same planet for everybody. It sits in a different sign for each rising sign, and it owns different houses of your life. This table is computed, not written — find your ascendant in the first column and read across.

Taurus is the outstanding row: Saturn exalted in Libra, owning the 9th and 10th, which makes it a yogakāraka — a dignified yogakāraka in an upachaya. Leo and Virgo both get Saturn in its own sign. Scorpio is the weak row, with Saturn debilitated in Aries while ruling the 3rd and 4th.

Which ascendants get the most from it

Taurus ascendant has the best version of this placement anywhere in the twelve. Saturn is exalted in Libra, owns the 9th and 10th — fortune and career — and is therefore a yogakāraka, and it sits in a house that suits malefics. Career built slowly out of service, competition and problems that other people would not take on.

Leo ascendant gets Saturn in Capricorn, its own sign, ruling the 6th and 7th. The 6th lord in the 6th is a classical strength: the house looks after itself, and enemies, debts and illness all stay manageable.

Virgo ascendant has Saturn in Aquarius, its own sign again, ruling the 5th and 6th. Strong for competitive work; the children question is the part that carries the strain instead.

Scorpio ascendant is the row to check. Saturn debilitated in Aries, ruling the 3rd and 4th. The upachaya still helps — a debilitated malefic in the 6th is far from the worst thing in a chart — but do not read the good half of the verse without confirming the dignity first.

What makes it better, and what makes it worse

Another malefic here with it
Usually an improvement, not a compounding. Two malefics in the 6th is a classical signature for someone whose opponents simply do not win. Benefics in this house are the ones that underperform.
Saturn dignified
Exalted in Libra or in Capricorn or Aquarius turns the whole page positive — the victories stay and much of the character cost drops away.
The 6th lord badly placed elsewhere
Saturn holding up the 6th does not repair a damaged 6th lord. Read the lord as well; a strong occupant with a wrecked lord is a house that works in public and fails in private.
Saturn with Ketu here
Sharp on enemies, harder on health. Ketu cuts where Saturn grinds, and in the house of disease the combination tends toward conditions that are hard to diagnose rather than hard to treat.
The Trimśāṁśa (D-30)
Illness and misfortune are judged in the D-30 before the birth chart. A comfortable-looking 6th house with a difficult D-30 is not a clean bill of health, and the reverse is also true.

When it shows up

Upachaya placements strengthen with age, visibly. Saturn in the 6th at twenty-five is a person losing arguments they should win; at fifty it is a person nobody bothers to argue with.

Saturn's own major period is generally constructive here rather than punishing — it is the stretch where a long dispute finally resolves in your favour, or where a long grind turns into standing.

Watch the weight and the digestion during Saturn periods and during Jupiter periods, for opposite reasons.

What actually helps

Choose long fights and refuse short ones. This is the practical instruction for the placement. You lose on speed and win on duration, so never let an opponent set a short deadline, and never pick a fight you cannot afford to still be having in three years.

Manage the debt deliberately. Saturn in the 6th is comfortable carrying obligations, which is exactly why the obligations accumulate. Set a limit in advance, because you will not feel the discomfort that normally tells people to stop.

Deal with the weight and the appetite honestly. Both texts name the eating and it is the most predictable health cost of this placement.

And notice the arrogance before other people do. Phaladīpikā names it, Sārāvalī calls it crookedness, and the people who have this placement are usually the last to see it in themselves.

How much of this actually applies to you

The chapter these verses come from closes with its own warning, and it is the most useful line in it: by the strength of the planet, its friendships, the aspects on it and whether it sits exalted or fallen, the result can come out full, half, or not at all. So read the verse as the starting position, not the verdict. A well-placed planet keeps most of the good and sheds much of the harm. A wrecked one does the reverse.

How the chart on this page is computed

Planetary positions come from an astronomical ephemeris and are converted to the sidereal zodiac on the Lahiri ayanāṁśa, with whole-sign houses. The check runs in your browser against our own Parāśara engine. No pre-written results, and no language model anywhere near a calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saturn in the 6th house good or bad?

Good, and unusually so. Sārāvalī states the rule at the end of that chapter: malefics harm the houses they occupy except the 6th, 8th and 12th, where they are auspicious. The 6th is also an upachaya, one of the four houses where a hard planet grows stronger with time. Both texts give this placement victory over enemies and material comfort.

Does Saturn in the 6th house give good health?

It generally protects longevity, but it does not promise comfort. A malefic in a malefic house cancels more than it compounds, so serious illness is less likely than the 6th house alone would suggest. What it does give is chronic, manageable conditions, a very large appetite and a real long-term weight problem — both texts say the native eats heavily.

How does Saturn in the 6th house defeat enemies?

By outlasting them, not by overpowering them. Long court cases, long office disputes and long negotiations go your way because you are still present when the other side has run out of money or patience. The same placement loses short confrontations, which is why the practical advice is to refuse them.

Which ascendant is best for Saturn in the 6th house?

Taurus, by some distance. Saturn is exalted in Libra there, rules the 9th and 10th, and is therefore a yogakāraka sitting in a house that suits it. Leo and Virgo both get Saturn in its own sign — Leo in particular has the 6th lord sitting in the 6th. Scorpio is the weak row, with Saturn debilitated in Aries.

Does Saturn in the 6th house cause debt?

It gives an unusual tolerance for carrying it, which amounts to the same thing over time. The 6th rules loans and obligations, and Saturn is comfortable holding them for years without the discomfort that would make someone else clear them. Set limits in advance rather than waiting to feel that a limit has been passed.

Do I need my exact birth time for this?

For the birth chart, roughly. The ascendant changes sign about every two hours, so if your time is off by fifteen or twenty minutes the house placements usually still hold. If you are unsure by more than an hour, the house a planet falls in can change completely — get the time rectified against dated events before you rely on any house reading.
