Example Chart (1988) — Druk Dasha Cancer (Exalted Mars in 3H from Dasha Lagna), Writing as Spiritual Mission & Druk Dasha's Proper Role

A father asks whether his son (born 1988) will write a book on spiritual matters. Cancer dasha is read from Scorpio: in the Dasha Pravesha Chakra the lagna lord Mars is exalted in the 3rd, which allows writing. But Druk Dasha is a supplement; whether a book gets written is seen from the rasi chart, the dasamsa and the regular dashas, and Druk Dasha only shows whether the writing belongs to the spiritual journey, as it did for Aurobindo. The teacher prefers Libra dasha (2010–2017), where Mercury is in the 3rd and Jupiter in the 2nd of the pravesha chart. The father's own chart (1961) follows: Gemini dasha with the 10th and 12th strong (recognition and detachment), Pisces dasha with the 3rd dominant (he may write more than his son) and a maraka combination that gives mystical experiences, Sagittarius dasha with a raja yoga in the 5th (fame). The page ends with the difference between the 6th and the 10th house and what Druk Dasha should be used for.

Key principle

This technique is only a supplement. If you know that somebody will write, and you want to know whether the writing has a link to his spiritual pursuit or not, then maybe you can see it here.

The question (asked by his father): is there a chance of his writing a book on spiritual matters in the current period?

Cancer Dasha (Running)

Progressed lagna = 5th from Cancer = Scorpio.

  • In the Dasha Pravesha Chakra, the lagna lord Mars is exalted in the 3rd from Scorpio (Capricorn). In the natal chart Mars is in Aquarius, the 4th from Scorpio.
  • Lagna lord exalted in the 3rd, and that lord being Mars, can show strong passion for sadhana. It can also show writing. It is a possibility.
  • To say that he will actually write a book, look at the rāśi chart, the daśāṁśa, the nakshatra dashas and Narayana dasha. Writing a book is an activity in society, part of one's karma, even when the book is on a spiritual subject.
  • A student asked whether Mercury should be involved for writing. The answer: possibly, but for that level of detail use the regular techniques.

"This technique is only a supplement. If you know that somebody will write, and you want to know whether the writing has a link to his spiritual pursuit or not, then maybe you can see it here."

Aurobindo and the 3rd House

  • In the period when Aurobindo started the magazine Arya and wrote most of his major works, the 3rd house was extremely strong in his Druk Dasha.
  • He came to revive interest in the Vedas and Upanishads and to steer people away from dry debate and ritualistic interpretation. Writing was a necessary part of his own spiritual progress. Had he not written, the purpose would not have been served and his further progress would have been obstructed.
  • So the 3rd-house reading a student gave for the first chart was a valid one. It only takes courage to predict it.

Libra Dasha (2010–2017) — The Writing Period

Progressed lagna = 5th from Libra = Aquarius. The teacher found this dasha more interesting than the current one.

  • Natal chart from Aquarius: lagna lord Rahu is in the lagna with the 3rd lord Mars. This puts the focus on the 3rd house in spiritual activity.
  • Jupiter is in the 3rd (Aries). He is not the kāraka of writing, but he is the kāraka of wisdom and the guru within. In the 3rd he favours sharing wisdom with others.
  • Dasha Pravesha Chakra from Aquarius: Mercury, kāraka of writing, is in the 3rd house of writing, aspected by the 3rd lord Mars (rāśi dṛṣṭi from Leo). Jupiter, kāraka of speech, is in the 2nd house of speech, in his own sign Pisces.
  • Result: many lectures, addressing many people, and writing articles or books.

"In my view, this is the period, 2010 to 2017, when he will do all those things."

The site casts Mars at 0°10′ Leo in this pravesha chart, just past the Cancer–Leo border. The aspect on Aries holds only from Leo.

Example chart

Natal chart: Sagittarius lagna. Sun and Rahu in Leo. Mars and exalted Mercury in Virgo. Jupiter and Saturn in Capricorn. Venus in Cancer. Moon in Scorpio. Ketu in Aquarius.

His own guess before the chart was opened: the 6th, 10th and 12th should be strong in the current dasha, because he had become more detached and was doing a lot of sadhana.

Gemini Dasha (1999–2008, Running)

Progressed lagna = 5th from Gemini = Libra.

  • Natal chart from Libra: the 12th (Virgo) holds its own lord Mercury, exalted. The 10th (Cancer) holds the lagna lord Venus. The 11th is also strong.
  • The house that holds the lagna lord becomes a focus, because the mind is on it.
  • Dasha Pravesha Chakra from Libra: 12th lord Mercury is again exalted in the 12th. The 10th is stronger still: lagna lord Venus is there with Rahu, the 5th lord. Lagna lord with 5th lord is a raja yoga and shows power.
  • 12th: building real detachment, even sannyasa. He has not taken sannyasa, but mentally he can become detached.
  • 10th: recognition in spiritual activity. The native objected that he held no powerful position. The teacher's reading: he is noticed as an organiser of religious events. This fitted.
  • 2nd in the pravesha chart holds its own lord Mars: resourceful in religious activities.
  • 7th in the pravesha chart holds Saturn (yogakāraka from Libra) and Jupiter. Saturn shows the ascetic, Jupiter the wise man; together in the 7th of interaction they show dealings with learned people and yogis. The teacher likened the pair to Brahma yoga.

His guess of the 10th and 12th was right.

Pisces Dasha (2008–2017)

Progressed lagna = 5th from Pisces = Cancer.

  • Natal chart from Cancer: the 2nd (Leo) and 3rd (Virgo) are strong, the 3rd especially. Lagna lord Moon is in the 5th of bhakti. Ketu is in the 8th, which always favours sadhana.
  • Dasha Pravesha Chakra from Cancer: Ketu is in the lagna. Lagna lord Moon is again in a trine, the 9th. Jupiter, the 6th lord, is in the 6th: Harsha yoga, an optimistic and positive attitude in spiritual progress.
  • The dominant house is the 3rd. In the pravesha chart it holds exalted 3rd lord Mercury, Venus, and the yogakāraka Mars. In the natal chart Mars joins exalted Mercury in the same house. Mercury is the kāraka of writing.
  • Result: a strong passion to make further spiritual progress, which is not there to the same degree in the current period, and a very good chance of writing.

"Actually, more than his son, he may write books related to spirituality. That is how it seems to me."

The teacher first placed the start a few months away, then corrected himself: it begins about a year after the class, and runs nine years because Pisces is a dual sign.

Maraka Combination and Mystical Experiences

A student asked what else Pisces dasha shows apart from writing.

  • Mystical experiences are seen from the 8th house.
  • Natal chart from Cancer: Ketu is in the 8th. The 2nd lord Sun is in the 2nd with Rahu, an 8th lord. That is a maraka combination.
  • Dasha Pravesha Chakra from Cancer: Rahu, the 8th lord, is in the 7th aspecting the lagna. The 2nd lord Sun is in the 2nd with Saturn, the 7th lord and the other 8th lord. The same maraka combination again, aspecting the 8th.
  • The teacher was plain that he was not speaking of death here. Strong maraka combinations, or strong combinations in the 8th, go with mystical experiences. Pisces dasha carries a strong chance of them.

Why a maraka combination? Out-of-body experiences are close to death. As long as there is attachment to the body, one is confined to it. To know one's true nature, that attachment has to be cut, and the process resembles what happens at death. Such experiences are not something bad; those on the purest path of bhakti have had them.

Periods for Guidance from a Guru

The guru rule of Part 1 applied to this chart, from the natal lagna:

  • Bhrātṛkāraka = Rahu. 9th lord from lagna = Sun. 9th lord from Jupiter = Mercury.
  • Mercury is in Virgo. Virgo dasha contains him, and he aspects the other three dual signs by rāśi dṛṣṭi. So Virgo, Gemini, Pisces and Sagittarius dashas, running from 1990 to 2026, all favour guidance from a guru.
  • Sun and Rahu are in Leo and aspect Aries, Libra and Capricorn.
  • So for most of his life he runs dashas of signs aspected by Mercury or by Sun and Rahu. He is well guided throughout.
  • The current Gemini dasha is aspected by Mercury in its Dasha Pravesha Chakra as well, so both charts support it.

Sagittarius Dasha (2017–2026) — Fame

Progressed lagna = 5th from Sagittarius = Aries.

  • The 5th dominates. In the natal chart the 5th lord Sun is in the 5th. In the Dasha Pravesha Chakra the 5th lord Sun is in the 5th with the lagna lord Mars, along with Mercury and Venus.
  • A strong 5th can give mantra and bhakti. It can also give fame: the 5th is the house of kīrti, of power and of following.
  • Lagna lord and 5th lord in the lagna or the 5th, together or apart, is a great raja yoga. Here it is formed in the 5th by Sun and Mars, both fiery kshatriya planets.
  • Result: from 2017 he gets a reputation as a spiritual person. Whether thousands know him or millions, the teacher would not say.
  • A student asked why this should not be read as mantra and bhakti. The answer: that reading is not wrong. An astrologer always has several readings open and narrows them by guidelines and intuition. Moon and Venus, the watery planets, favour the bhakti path; here the yoga is of Sun and Mars.

Healing Others in Gemini Dasha

The native asked whether healing people by Reiki shows in the current dasha.

  • Kāraka of healing: Moon. Dealing with others: the 7th. An act one accomplishes: the 10th. So the 7th and 10th should link to the Moon.
  • Natal chart from Libra: the 10th lord Moon is in the 2nd. There is a chance.
  • Dasha Pravesha Chakra from Libra: stronger. 10th lord Moon is in Scorpio with the 7th lord Mars.
  • Scorpio is the 8th sign of the natural zodiac, so the treatment is of an occult kind, not ordinary medicine.
  • It shows in Druk Dasha because for him it is part of his spiritual journey. For someone who practises it only as a livelihood it would not show here; it would show in the nakshatra dashas, Narayana dasha and the daśāṁśa.

6th House Versus 10th House, and What Druk Dasha Is For

Spreading Spirituality: The Artha Trikonas

A student asked which house shows spreading spirituality. The answer: the artha trikonas. The 10th must be strong, or the 6th and 2nd, for someone to put something together.

  • To found a society or an organisation, or build an ashram, the 10th is the important house.
  • Blind chart. An astrologer visiting the teacher asked him to try Druk Dasha on a chart without telling him whose it was. The native had built a large organisation in one period. In that period the 10th was very strong in both the natal chart and the Dasha Pravesha Chakra. The astrologer confirmed the readings. The teacher promised to bring the chart to a later class.

6th Versus 10th

6th house10th house
MeaningObstacles overcome; serviceAccomplishment
WorkA lot of work; you may or may not be noticedA lot of work, and you are noticed for it
ResultKarma yoga. The 6th is the key house; the 8th is also possibleCredit and recognition; known for something in that period
  • The 6th is the path towards accomplishment. The 10th is the accomplishment.
  • Example: at a homa the day before the class, a few people did the chores before, during and after. Whether or not they chanted, they get the same result as those who chanted, or more.

"Especially in Kali Yuga, karma yoga is a very relevant path. Just serve people, and eventually it will dawn on you that what you are serving is actually God."

What Druk Dasha Is For

Use it forDo not use it alone for
The theme of spiritual progress in each periodPredicting that a person will write a book
Which houses, and so which path (bhakti, service, sadhana, detachment), dominateAny precise worldly event
When a guru or his guidance is likelyReplacing the rāśi chart, the daśāṁśa, nakshatra dashas and Narayana dasha
Whether a known activity is part of the person's spiritual journey

An activity shows in Druk Dasha only when it is part of the person's spiritual journey. Writing showed for Aurobindo, and healing for the third native, for that reason.
