Young Woman Chart (1980) — Sanyasa Indicators & Spiritual Path Analysis
A 24-year-old woman wants to renounce the world; her family asks whether she will undo it later. The chart has no pravrajya yoga, yet rasi, navamsa, D-20 and D-10 agree on a spiritual life: Ketu in the 12th, lagna lord in the 8th with Sun and Jupiter, Ruchaka Yoga, Dhimanta Yoga, the 8th–12th exchange in D-20, Gajakesari and Lakshmi Yoga in the 12th of D-10. The page teaches the D-20 Narayana Dasha from the 8th lord and how to read the dasha sign from the Atmakaraka. It then reads marriage (Shatabdika Dasha, Upapada), children (Saptamsa) and the spouse (7th lord and his graha arudha). The verdict: she goes down the spiritual path, and later marries and has one child. Narasimha is the deity advised.
Key principle
This is not basically a confused spiritual person. This does seem like a bona fide person really interested in spirituality who may find the path in this life.

Example Chart — Woman Wanting Sanyasa
The Question
A student brings the chart. The native is a 24-year-old woman of Indian origin, strongly devoted to a spiritual cause. For about a year and a half she has wanted to renounce everything and become a sannyasin, and she is now at the threshold. Nobody in the family has gone this way. The family asks: is this a big mistake she will undo in a few years, or is it what she is destined to do?
Rasi Chart
Aquarius lagna. Sun, Jupiter and Saturn in Virgo (8th). Moon and Mercury in Libra (9th). Mars in Scorpio (10th). Venus in Leo (7th). Rahu in Cancer (6th), Ketu in Capricorn (12th).
- Ketu in the 12th: in general shows spirituality. Ketu is in Marutvan shashtyamsa. Marutvan — "one who possesses the strength of wind", the god of strong winds; spiritually, strong determination and force. So what Ketu shows comes from past-life karma of strength and determination, and is a strong indication in this chart.
- Atmakaraka = Moon. In the Navamsa the Moon is in the 4th house. The 12th from it holds Mercury, and its lord is Mars.
- Lagna lord in the 8th. Aquarius has two lords, Saturn and Rahu; Saturn is much the stronger. The lagna lord shows the buddhi — where the intelligence is focused. In the 8th it can show interest in the occult and mysticism, which could also be experiments, tantra and the like. But Saturn is with the Sun and Jupiter, both sattvic, traditional planets. So this is a sattvic, traditional, religious, conforming kind of mysticism.
- A student objects: the lagna lord in the 8th could equally show someone who struggles. PVNR agrees: there are several possibilities in the rasi chart, and he is picking one from what he already knows about the person. Knowing nothing, he would not have picked from the rasi alone; he would have consulted the divisional charts.
No pravrajya yoga. None of Parashara's pravrajya yogas programmed in the software is present.
"You don't see anything special just based on yoga indicating that the person will renounce the material world."
Chamara, Shankha, Raja Yogas and Viparita Raja Yogas are there, but these are found in many charts.
3rd and 6th from Arudha Lagna (AL is in Aries). These show whether the person is perceived as a sadhu or as a blunt person: the 3rd from AL is the initiative she is seen to have, the 6th the destruction of enemies she is seen to possess.
- 3rd from AL (Gemini): a benefic's sign, empty.
- 6th from AL (Virgo): Jupiter, Sun and Saturn — benefics and malefics together.
- Reading: she may want to renounce, but she is not an easygoing, soft-spoken sadhu type. She is seen as someone who does not take up many things, but once she decides on one she finishes it off.
- A student adds the view from lagna: the 3rd house is Aries, Mars's sign, and Rahu is in the 6th — so in reality she has a lot of initiative. PVNR accepts this.
Ruchaka Yoga — the planet that stands out. Mars is in his own sign Scorpio in the 10th. Mars in own or exaltation sign in a quadrant makes a natural leader, enterprising and bold.
"They basically don't follow people. People follow them. Whether they want to go create an army … or whether they want to become sannyasis. Whatever they want to do, they will do it with lot of strength, lot of willpower, and whatever they want to do, nobody can stop them."
Dhimanta Yoga. 5th lord Mercury and 6th lord Moon are together in Libra, about 5° apart, and aspect the lagna by rāśi dṛṣṭi (Libra aspects Aquarius).
- Any link between the 5th, the 6th and lagna is Dhimanta Yoga. The 5th is scholarship and innate ability; the 6th is the ability to overcome obstacles. Together: ability used to overcome obstacles. The link to lagna makes it manifest.
- The software does not list it; it has only Parashara's yogas. The related Shankha Yoga (5th and 6th lords in mutual quadrants, lagna lord strong) is listed, but it is a common yoga.
- Reading: this is an intelligent person who, after deep thinking, does not find the world exciting enough to spend time on. Not a dull person who has lost interest.
Navamsa — Dharma
- The 9th lord of the rasi chart, Venus, controls dharma at the physical level.
- In the Navamsa (Aquarius lagna) Venus is in the 7th in Leo with the Sun and Mars. Well placed in a quadrant, but weak: combust and subdued between the two.
- Still a Raja Yoga, "a very uncomfortable Raja Yoga": Venus (4th and 9th lord) joins the Sun (7th lord) and Mars (10th lord).
- Dharma is strong, with something undesirable in it because Venus is uncomfortable there.
D-20 (Vimsamsa) — Spirituality
D-20 shows rising above the obvious world, transcending the material.
Fixing the D-20 lagna. The lagna is Libra; it changes 41 seconds earlier (to Virgo) and 2 minutes 49 seconds later. Tested with the D-20 Narayana Dasha:
- Libra lagna: Aquarius dasha is running — the 5th house of devotion and sadhana. Its stronger lord Rahu is in the 10th house of karma with Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are the key planets of the Vimsamsa; they give the desire to transcend this world. A sudden rise of spiritual interest fits.
- Virgo lagna: the same dasha would be the 6th house, with its lord in the 11th. No devotion expected.
- So Libra is taken as correct.
Rahu and Ketu in the vargas (a student asks why they are together): in D-20 they are always together — in spirituality their agendas are joined. In D-9 and D-10 they are opposite. In the Kashinatha Hora (D-2) they are uncorrelated and can be anywhere.
| Indicator | Placement | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | In lagna (Libra) | The same Jupiter who influences the lagna lord in the 8th of the rasi. Jupiter in lagna is excellent for the matter of any divisional chart |
| Jupiter as 3rd and 6th lord | In lagna | In this chart he gives initiative and the ability to go through the struggle. Jupiter ruling 3rd and 6th also means not much struggle: spiritual understanding comes naturally. The knowledge is within her |
| Lagna lord Venus | Debilitated in the 12th (Virgo) | Good for spirituality and giving up — lagna lord in a moksha sthana. Bad if the aim is marriage, children and money with a puja once a month |
| Mercury, 8th lord of the rasi chart | 8th house (Taurus) | Strengthens the 8th: the desire to do tapasya and sadhana is very strong |
| Venus (8th lord) ⇄ Mercury (12th lord) | Parivartana between 8th and 12th | See below |
| Rahu + Ketu | 12th from AK Moon (Moon in Leo, nodes in Cancer) | Nodes in the moksha trikona from the Atma: the soul's interest in moksha |
The controlling planet of D-20. As the 9th lord of the rasi chart is the controlling planet for dharma and the Navamsa, the 8th lord of the rasi chart — the planet of sadhana and tapasya — is the key planet of the Vimsamsa.
The 8th–12th exchange.
- An exchange between two lords within the same trikona (dharma, artha, kama or moksha) is good, and makes those two houses more important than the others.
- The one whose agenda is tapasya and sadhana sits in the house of the result, complete detachment. The one told to give detachment sits in the house of tapasya. They share an interest.
- The software lists it as a Viparita Raja Yoga. It is not a material Raja Yoga here; in D-20, for moksha, it is very auspicious.
- Names are not enough — look at the nature of the planets. If the two dislike each other, each does the other's work badly. Mercury and Venus are good friends, so the yoga works freely.
D-20 Narayana Dasha and the Atmakaraka
How it is built: take the 8th lord of the rasi chart (Mercury) and place him in the Vimsamsa. He is the intelligence applied to tapasya at the physical level; that is where Narayana sits. At birth he is in Taurus. The dasha then moves to Sagittarius, Cancer, and Aquarius.
"Wherever Narayana is, that is where God is. So that is where the focus will be."
- Aquarius dasha, October 2004 – 2011. From lagna it is the 5th: devotion, worship, meditation, mantra. From AK Moon it is the 7th: the desire of the soul, here about which spiritual environment to go to or create. The desire to grow spiritually and to renounce became strong from October 2004.
- Virgo dasha, 2011 – 2015. It holds the lagna lord and is the 12th house. A very important dasha spiritually, "even more conducive".
The dasha sign counted from the Atmakaraka (in any divisional chart):
| House from AK | State of the soul |
|---|---|
| 1st | The Atma is shining. Whatever it came to do, it is already doing |
| 4th | Happiness of the soul — not moksha, but the happiness of having the right direction. Clear purpose, no unease |
| 8th | Tapasya, sadhana. The soul knows what it wants and is engaged in it. Working hard, but happy |
| 12th | The soul has got moksha in that area of life. Fully contented, wants nothing more. No restlessness |
| 3rd, 7th, 11th | Kama trikona — desires of the soul. Some restlessness |
- In the Navamsa the 7th from AK is the soul's desire about the dharmic environment; in the Vimsamsa, about the spiritual environment.
- A student asks if this holds in any chart, e.g. the 12th from AK in D-10. Yes: as far as the karma being done, the Atma has no desire and is happy.
- 12th from lagna is different. It shows giving something up: either having achieved what you set out to achieve, or a compromise — deciding not to go to the next level.
- Three references: the Moon shows how you are feeling. Lagna shows what you are doing — your intelligence. The Atmakaraka shows what moves you from inside; it works like a conscience.
"When soul has a desire, you are very restless because soul doesn't have any other way to let you know that it desires something. It just makes you restless."
- Student's question: a planet owns or connects to both the 3rd and the 12th from AK — which result? Both come. Which period gives which is seen from the antardashas. If the mahadasha lord has a clear preference, that side shows more: Mercury owns the 3rd and 12th from AK, Venus sits in the 3rd, and Venus dasha–Mercury antardasha runs — the 3rd-house results are prominent.
D-10 (Dasamsa) — The Karma She Does
D-10 shows the karmic and professional environment — the kind of work you do: engineer, policeman, spiritualist. If she is to be a sannyasin in an ashram, it has to show in the Dasamsa too.
The stronger 10th lord. The 10th house of the rasi chart is Scorpio, owned by Mars and Ketu.
"When one of the two planets owning the house is in own house, the other planet should be taken."
- Mars is in Scorpio itself, so Ketu gives the results of the 10th lord. Ketu is in the 12th of the rasi chart: sannyasin-type karma is quite possible.
- Which lord to carry into the Dasamsa: judge the strength of the two lords in the Dasamsa itself, not in the rasi. Narayana is in both Mars and Ketu; to see how he is influenced by the professional environment, take the one stronger in that environment. Here Ketu is the stronger in both charts.
- In D-10 (Cancer lagna) Ketu is in the 10th house in Aries with Mercury: good karma, of the nature of Mercury and Ketu.
Yogas in D-10:
- Gajakesari Yoga — Moon and Jupiter together in Gemini. Makes one well-known.
- The same pair is lagna lord + 9th lord: Lakshmi Yoga. Someone who knows her dharma and follows it; intelligence joined to dharma.
- Both happen in the 12th house — moksha, giving up, being relaxed. Again the spiritual path.
- The 10th has Ketu, karaka of moksha, joined by Mercury, the 3rd and 12th lord. The 12th house gets huge focus.
Dasamsa amsas (as read from the software):
- Jupiter and Moon in Brahma amsa: digging deeper. She will read the scriptures and study — "a researcher in the line of moksha", and reasonably well-known.
- Mercury in Kubera amsa: money and resourcefulness. It does not fit the rest of the chart that she makes money; she may handle a lot of money wherever she goes.
- Ketu in Yama amsa: very disciplined. In the 10th, as 10th lord of the rasi, an ascetic who follows strict rules.
Mercury–Mars parivartana (a student points it out; Mercury in Aries, Mars in Virgo):
- Once the exchange is triggered Mars acts as if he is in the 10th, so the two 10th lords of the rasi chart come together there. A lot of vigour and fire in her path — not at the beginning, but after the exchange is triggered.
- Mars is the yogakaraka of the Dasamsa (5th and 10th lord from Cancer), so what he shows carries weight.
- Mars is in Ishana amsa, and so is Saturn in lagna. Ishana shows procedures and religious worship. Besides sadhana at an ashram she may be in charge of some worship at a small temple there.
Parampara (a student says Venus, Ketu and Saturn make a tapasvi yoga, not a traditional one, so she is not following a parampara): PVNR answers that following a tradition is shown by Ketu, the karaka of parampara, and Ketu is strong here. She could be in a bona fide lineage of master–student succession.
Verdict So Far
Rasi, Navamsa, Vimsamsa and Dasamsa agree: it is very likely she becomes an ascetic and lives a spiritual life at a monastery.
"This is not basically a confused spiritual person. This does seem like a bona fide person really interested in spirituality who may find the path in this life."
Not someone who will try and then come back. Whether she will stay without husband and children is a separate question (Part 8).
D-60 Shashtiamsha Verification
"Just out of curiosity" — the Shashtyamsa is not known to be accurate.
How much room there is. The D-60 lagna is Leo. It changes 41 seconds earlier and 29 seconds later. The earlier change was already ruled out, because 41 seconds earlier is where the D-20 lagna becomes Virgo, and that did not fit. So the D-60 lagna is Leo, or Virgo if the birth was about half a minute later. Moving the time by half a minute changes nothing in the charts read so far — only the Shashtyamsa.
Both options are read from the Arudha Lagna, for the past life:
If Leo — AL is in Scorpio.
- Mars, Sun and Ketu are in AL. Sun and Mars are friends and both are with Ketu, the Sun's enemy; Mars is in own sign as much as Ketu is. They shut Ketu down.
- A dominant, political, very powerful, Martian person.
- Jupiter in Pisces in the 5th from AL: knowledgeable.
If Virgo — AL is in Cancer.
- 8th from AL (Aquarius): Saturn, the 8th lord, with Mercury, the 12th lord. A Viparita Raja Yoga, in a sign of mysticism and philosophy. Someone interested in mysticism.
- 9th from AL (Pisces): the 9th lord Jupiter in his own house. A very good guru and a strong sense of dharma.
- 5th from AL (Scorpio): Ketu, Sun and Mars. The fire belongs to the 5th, not to lagna: fiery devotion, highly religious.
"This seems more likely given that she is interested in spirituality in this particular life."
Moola Dasha (to illustrate the previous class):
- She is running Jupiter's Moola Dasha. Jupiter is in Saumya shashtyamsa: the past-life karma he carries is flower-like — tender, fragrant. Nothing negative.
- With Virgo lagna Jupiter is in the 7th: a strong desire, given at the karmic level, for Jupiterian and Piscean matters — spirituality, the knowledge of the rishis.
- This supports Virgo over Leo. PVNR's caveat: "We can't really rectify confidently just based on it, but that is definitely a good point." The time could be off by half a minute.
Marriage, Children and Spouse
"Sannyasa part we are not sure. Not having children and husband, we are not 100% sure of it."
What is sure: she is very spiritual and will not work at a corporation chasing revenue and salary.
Which Nakshatra Dasha
- A student offers a criterion: the 10th lord is in the 10th house. PVNR points out that the lagna is also vargottama (Aquarius in rasi and navamsa). Both conditional dashas apply.
- The 84-year equal dasha (Chaturaseeti Sama, for 10th lord in 10th) shows Mercury dasha running.
- Shatabdika Dasha goes with vargottama lagna. The class had said Shatabdika "based on a wrong criterion", but it also applies.
- Which to prefer? The rarer condition and the longer dasha. Vargottama lagna: 12 of 108 navamsas, 1 in 9. 10th lord in 10th: ten signs have one lord (1/12 each), two signs have two lords (about 1/6 each), giving 14/144 ≈ 0.097. The two are close. Shatabdika is the longer.
- PVNR: "I am not 100% sure how it should be used in this particular case, but my gut feeling is Shatabdika Dasha is more appropriate."
Is Marriage Coming
- Shatabdika: Jupiter dasha, Saturn antardasha. Jupiter and Saturn make a yoga in the 8th house of the rasi chart, and it is giving its full results from October 2004: interest in the occult, in Vedic and traditional knowledge. The same date came from the D-20 Narayana Dasha.
- For marriage this period has only a very weak link.
- Navamsa 7th house: Sun and Mars are strong there, and the karaka Venus is with them. One of these three should give marriage. None of their dashas is running.
- Sun antardasha in Jupiter dasha comes in October 2010. Then there is some chance. Saturn is not expected to give marriage.
- PVNR picked the Sun only because it comes earlier. Venus is the strongest indicator: he is in the 7th house in both rasi and navamsa, and he is the Upapada lord in both.
- No chance of marriage, or even of interest in it, now. "Definitely not in the next 5 years." He admits the timing picture is hazy and the dasha choice may not be right.
Upapada (Taurus in both rasi and navamsa):
- The Upapada lord Venus is in a quadrant from the Upapada and has argala on it. The 2nd lord from the Upapada, Mercury, is not bad.
- A general dictum: with Upapada in Taurus, marriage is tough to come; it comes after a lot of effort.
- So marriage will not come easily. But the 7th house is very strong, and PVNR is "not at all convinced that she will not marry in her entire life".
Advice to the parents: telling her now that she must marry will have no effect. If they can afford to, take it easy and let her do what she wants. The right time will come.
Saptamsa — Children
The D-7 lagna is Taurus. It has enough leeway (6 minutes one way, 3.75 the other), so the Saptamsa is reliable.
- 5th lord of the rasi chart is the controlling planet for children: Mercury. In D-7 he is in a quadrant (10th, Aquarius) in a friendly sign. Auspicious.
- Jupiter, the karaka: in the 11th in his own sign Pisces. Strong.
- Within the Saptamsa the controlling planet is the 9th lord for a woman and the 5th lord for a man. From Taurus the 9th lord is Saturn, and he is in lagna. A student notes this is his marana karaka sthana. PVNR: there is a blemish, but he is in a friendly sign in a quadrant, so it is not bad.
- Overall it looks likely she will have children.
First child: shown by the lord of Capricorn (the 9th from the D-7 lagna), Saturn, in Taurus.
- Very hardworking.
- Probably a girl — even sign, and the planet is Saturn.
- Close to the mother and like her from the Saptamsa point of view, since Saturn is in the lagna.
- Ketu in the 8th (houses here are counted from the Saptamsa lagna, where Saturn sits): spiritual, interested in occult knowledge. Jupiter and Moon in the 11th: Gajakesari.
- Mars and Rahu in the 2nd (Gemini): harsh speech. But Mercury (in Aquarius) and Rahu (in Gemini) are in parivartana. Once the exchange is triggered Mercury acts as if he is in Gemini and dominates over Mars: harsh speech early in life, a pleasant speaker later.
Second child: "We have to cross over Ketu. So it's very unlikely. There is some chance, but very unlikely."
Conclusion: one child, a girl; and she will marry.
Why She Will Come Back to the World
- At first the world looks like maya and nonsense. After understanding who she is, and the nature of Shiva and Shakti, she will see that maya has a purpose: it is the will of the Divine Mother.
- A jivanmukta has got moksha while living, and still goes through the chores of the world, because he does them without desire and without bandha. He is not touched by the karma he does. Such people marry, have children and go to work.
- She may be destined for that path. It is tougher and does not come in the first step.
"First let her renounce the world, but eventually … my sincere belief is that she will come back to the material world."
The Spouse — Two References in the Navamsa
- 7th lord's graha arudha — the material image of the person.
- 7th lord himself — the true nature of the person.
- A7, the arudha of the 7th house — an arudha of an inanimate house, so it cannot be the world's image of a person. It is the world's view of the relationship: are they a good couple, do they do dharma together.
- 7th house itself — what kind of marriage.
How a spouse sees you is a mixture of the arudha and the lord: someone living close to you knows part of the reality.
Material image — the 7th lord's graha arudha is in Taurus. Taking Taurus as lagna:
- Exalted Moon in lagna: seen as compassionate, kind, easygoing, and also hardworking and practical. Taurus is practicality.
- 9th house (Capricorn): Jupiter debilitated with Rahu — Guru-Chandala Yoga. Dharma is there, but under Rahu. Religious in a different way; practical in the matter of dharma.
- 4th house (Leo): Mars, Sun and Venus. A lot of vehicles, land and property.
- 12th house (Aries): the 5th lord Mercury. A scholar in occult knowledge (rule below).
- Summary: learned, God-fearing, dharmic, hardworking, kind, probably very rich. Not seen as a moksha person. "He may not be exactly like her."
The 5th lord counted from the 5th house. The 5th lord shows scholarship; his house counted from the 5th shows its kind. In the 12th he is 8th from the 5th: occult knowledge. In the 2nd he is 10th from the 5th: scholarship in work, profession, karmakanda. The same can be done for the 10th lord counted from the 10th.
Will he be of Indian origin? (the student's question). Look for Rahu's influence, which shows a foreigner or someone from a different culture. Rahu is in the dharma house; there is no clear influence on the lagna, only aspects. "There is some chance. I can't say conclusively."
True nature — the 7th lord Sun, in Leo. Taking Leo as lagna:
- Mars, Sun and Venus in lagna: fiery, aggressive, authoritative. A doer.
- Ketu in the 12th (Cancer): he is in fact interested in moksha. That is why he is interested in her.
- Saturn in the 8th (Pisces), in parivartana with Jupiter: the 8th is strong; interest in the occult.
- The world sees a successful, intelligent, compassionate man, not a moksha person. In reality he desires moksha.
- Both references agree on one thing: he is very successful materially.
How they meet: probably someone outside the ashram setting — a visitor who believes in the Swamiji there. They keep meeting and become fond of each other. Not before five years.
Concluding Remarks
"I think that this lady is destined to go in the spiritual path. If she wants to be a sannyasin and go to a monastery, I don't find any logic in stopping her. But I am not afraid that she will not get married. My feeling is, after some initial spiritual growth, she will realize that she needs to get married, and she will go back to the grihasthashram … But she will find a husband who will respect her interest in spirituality and let her follow her spiritual path."
Recommended Deity
- Mercury is in a Martian sign (Aries) in the Navamsa, in the 12th from the Atmakaraka. Mercury means a Vishnu avatar can give her moksha; the Martian sign makes it a Martian avatar. Narasimha, in any form — Lakshmi Narasimha, Ugra Narasimha, Jwala Narasimha.
- The Sun shows Shiva. The Sun is in the 4th from the Atmakaraka: he does not give moksha to the Atma, he gives it direction — when the Atma is deciding the dharma of the person. He also aspects the 12th from AK (rāśi dṛṣṭi, Leo on Aries). So Shiva worship is very good, and she can continue it.
- But Narasimha is the deity who can give her moksha. It may not happen at once; when she takes up Narasimha she comes close to moksha.
- Mantra Raja Pada Stotram — a stotra to Narasimha composed by Lord Shiva. A short mantra is formed from the first words of the stotra. That mantra is extremely guhyam; PVNR does not say it in class. If someone can give her the stotra and the mantra, practising it "will really take her towards moksha".
Key Technical Concepts from This Lesson
Stronger Lord Rule
When a sign has two lords and one of them sits in that sign, the other is taken as the lord. When the lord has to be carried into a divisional chart (e.g. the 10th lord of the rasi placed in D-10), judge which of the two is stronger in that divisional chart, not in the rasi.
Controlling Planets
- Navamsa: 9th lord of the rasi chart (dharma).
- Vimsamsa: 8th lord of the rasi chart (sadhana, tapasya). The D-20 Narayana Dasha starts from him.
- Saptamsa: 5th lord of the rasi chart; within D-7, the 9th lord for a woman and the 5th lord for a man.
Rahu and Ketu Across Vargas
Always together in D-20. Opposite in D-9 and D-10. Uncorrelated in the Kashinatha Hora.
What Each Strength Is For
- Digbala — is the planet happy with the direction of life it has been given (1st, 10th, 7th, 4th). Read it in every varga.
- Shadbala — which planet of a yoga delivers the result.
- Ashtakavarga Bala — cooperation from other planets; per varga; for dashas and antardashas.
- Vimsopaka Bala — overall strength across the vargas; scales the result, good or bad.
- None of them says whether the planet is good or bad. That comes from ownership and placement.
