Haṁsa Yoga — do you have it, and what it actually gives

Updated 28 Aug 2026

Haṁsa Yoga is the Jupiter form of the Pañca Mahāpuruṣa, formed when Jupiter occupies a kendra from the Lagna in Sagittarius, Pisces, or exalted in Cancer.

It is the most favourably described of the five. Where Ruchaka carries arrogance and Śaśa carries a genuine moral warning, the classical account of Haṁsa contains no such counterweight — which is itself worth noticing.

One yoga is one sentence of a chart. The daśās decide when it speaks, and the divisional charts decide whether it holds.

How Haṁsa Yoga forms

Both conditions must hold at once. This is the exact rule the check above applies — not a paraphrase of it.

ConditionRequirement
The grahaJupiter
Its dignityIn its own sign (Sagittarius or Pisces) or exalted (Cancer)
Its houseIn a kendra from the Lagna — the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th
Both togetherJupiter must satisfy the dignity AND the kendra at the same time. Either alone is not the yoga.

This is why Haṁsa Yoga is uncommon without being rare: Jupiter spends a fixed share of its cycle in those signs, and the kendra requirement then cuts that by roughly two thirds.

What Haṁsa Yoga gives

The texts describe someone respected by good people, holding a position of dignity, with a beautiful body, refined tastes and a virtuous disposition. They add the auspicious hand and foot markings — conch, lotus, fish and aṅkuśa — which belong to the older tradition of reading the body alongside the chart.

What it actually produces is moral authority: the person others bring difficult questions to. Not necessarily powerful, and not necessarily wealthy, but trusted — and consulted by people who have no obligation to consult them.

Its failure mode is complacency. Jupiter this well placed rarely has to fight for anything, and the corresponding weakness is a life that expands comfortably without ever being tested.

Why this combination and not another

Jupiter owns Sagittarius and Pisces and is exalted in Cancer. In all three it is undiluted — the graha of jñāna, of expansion and of dharma, acting in its own idiom.

The Cancer case is the strongest and the least common. Jupiter exalted in Cancer in a kendra puts the most benevolent graha at its highest dignity in the most structurally significant house available, and the classical descriptions of Haṁsa are effectively descriptions of that configuration.

Note the interaction with directional strength: Jupiter has full Dig-bala in the 1st house, so Haṁsa formed in the Lagna is the version that carries the most force behind the same promise.

When Haṁsa does not deliver

The texts attach a condition that popular accounts almost always drop: these five yogas give their promised effect only when the Lagna or the Moon and the yoga-forming planet are without blemish — not combust, not sitting with or hemmed between malefics, not debilitated in the Navāṁśa. Jupiter is slow and rarely combust, so the blemish that matters for Haṁsa is usually a node — Rāhu or Ketu sharing the sign, which the tradition treats as corrupting Jupiter's judgement rather than weakening its strength. A Haṁsa carried by an afflicted Jupiter is a real yoga producing a thinned result, and this check reduces the grade one step when it finds that condition rather than reporting the yoga as though the affliction were not there.

What it means to have more than one

The five are graded by count, and the classical scale is steep: one such yoga makes a person fortunate, two make them the equal of a king, three make them a king, four a sovereign among sovereigns, and five place them above even that.

Read that as a statement about degree, not about literal thrones. A single Mahāpuruṣa yoga means one faculty — here wisdom, judgement and moral authority — is carried by inherent capacity rather than by circumstance. Two means the life rests on two such faculties at once, which is genuinely uncommon; three is rare enough that the rest of the chart has to be read very carefully before anything is concluded.

They are read from the Moon as well as from the Lagna, and the texts hold them effective from both. This check uses the Lagna, the stricter and more commonly applied reading — so a Jupiter that satisfies the rule from your Moon but not from your Lagna will not be reported here.

How this check works

Your chart is computed from an astronomical ephemeris on the Lahiri (Citrapakṣa) ayanāṁśa, and the formation rule stated on this page is tested against it directly — the same rule, not a paraphrase. Where the classical texts disagree about a condition, the page names the reading we follow.

Frequently asked questions

What is Hamsa Yoga?

One of the five Pañca Mahāpuruṣa yogas, formed when Jupiter occupies a kendra from the Lagna while in Sagittarius, Pisces, or exalted in Cancer.

What does Hamsa Yoga give?

Respect from good people, a position of dignity, refined tastes and a virtuous nature. In practice its signature is moral authority — being the person others bring difficult questions to, without any obligation on their part to do so.

Which house is best for Hamsa Yoga?

The 1st, because Jupiter also has full directional strength (Dig-bala) there. The same yoga formed in the 7th carries the promise with less force behind it.

Is Hamsa Yoga the strongest Mahapurusha yoga?

It is the most favourably described — the classical account carries none of the warnings attached to Ruchaka or Śaśa. Strength is a separate question, and depends on the specific sign, house and whether Jupiter is unblemished.

Does having this yoga guarantee the result?

No. A yoga is a promise, and a promise still has to be delivered by a graha capable of delivering it. The classical texts are explicit that a yoga gives its full effect only when the planets forming it are unblemished — not combust, not hemmed by malefics, not debilitated. Most yogas also fruit during the daśā of the planets that form them rather than continuously; the Nābhasa yogas are the stated exception, and their own pages say so.

Which chart is the yoga checked in?

The Rāśi (D-1) chart, which is where the classical definitions are stated. A yoga present in the D-1 and unsupported in the relevant divisional chart is a promise that tends not to ripen, so it is worth checking the varga for the matter concerned.
