Daṇḍa Yoga — do you have it, and what Sārāvalī says it gives

Updated 28 Aug 2026

Daṇḍa Yoga (also called the staff) is one of the thirty-two Nābhasa yogas, in the Ākṛti class. It forms when all seven grahas are confined to the 10th, 11th, 12th and 1st houses.

Daṇḍa is the only one of the four-house yogas whose quadrant contains no relational house at all, which is why its classical result is stated almost entirely as loss of people rather than loss of things.

Enter date, time and place of birth. The formation rule on this page is tested against your own chart — it stays in your browser.

Not sure of your birth time? Correct it from your life events — a few minutes changes the navāṁśa, and every reading with it.

One yoga is one sentence of a chart. The daśās decide when it speaks, and the divisional charts decide whether it holds.

What Sārāvalī says Daṇḍa Yoga gives

Sārāvalī gives the bleakest result in the chapter: loss of wife and children, poverty, discarded by everyone, cut off from one's own circle, grieved, mean, and in service.

The placement accounts for it. The quadrant runs 10th, 11th, 12th, 1st — action, gain, loss and self — and it excludes every relational house in the chart. Nothing in the 4th, the 5th or the 7th means nothing structurally supporting home, children or partnership.

A daṇḍa is a staff — the implement of someone with nothing else, carried by the renunciate and the beggar alike. The image and the result agree.

Ākṛti yogas — the shape the grahas make

Daṇḍa is the only four-house yoga whose quadrant contains no relational house at all.

We measured it rather than guessed: across a sample of 398 charts, Daṇḍa formed in 0.5% of them.

The twenty Ākṛti yogas are named for the figure the seven grahas trace across the houses — a boat, a parasol, a bow, a lotus. Sārāvalī gives the class its own result before the individual ones: a person with any Ākṛti yoga is satisfied with their own fortune, earns through authority, is dear to those in power, and is famous. The individual yoga then says what kind of person that is.

Two things true of every Nābhasa yoga

They run continuously — Sārāvalī says the Nābhasa yogas are "effective at all times independent of Daśās", which sets them apart from almost every other yoga in Jyotiṣa. And they constrain all seven grahas at once, so most charts carry only a few and a "not present" result is the ordinary answer.

How this check works

Your chart is computed from an astronomical ephemeris on the Lahiri (Citrapakṣa) ayanāṁśa, and the formation rule stated on this page is tested against it directly — the same rule, not a paraphrase. Where the classical texts disagree about a condition, the page names the reading we follow.

Frequently asked questions

What is Daṇḍa Yoga?

One of the thirty-two Nābhasa yogas described in Sārāvalī, belonging to the Ākṛti class. It forms when the seven grahas are confined to the 10th, 11th, 12th and 1st houses.

What does Daṇḍa Yoga give?

Sārāvalī gives the bleakest result in the chapter: loss of wife and children, poverty, discarded by everyone, cut off from one's own circle, grieved, mean, and in service.

Do Nabhasa yogas depend on the dasha?

No, and this is unusual. Sārāvalī says the Nābhasa yogas are effective at all times independent of daśās. They describe a standing condition of the whole chart rather than an event waiting for a planetary period.

Does having this yoga guarantee the result?

No. A yoga is a promise, and a promise still has to be delivered by a graha capable of delivering it. The classical texts are explicit that a yoga gives its full effect only when the planets forming it are unblemished — not combust, not hemmed by malefics, not debilitated. Most yogas also fruit during the daśā of the planets that form them rather than continuously; the Nābhasa yogas are the stated exception, and their own pages say so.

Which chart is the yoga checked in?

The Rāśi (D-1) chart, which is where the classical definitions are stated. A yoga present in the D-1 and unsupported in the relevant divisional chart is a promise that tends not to ripen, so it is worth checking the varga for the matter concerned.
