Adhi Yoga — benefics behind the Moon

Updated 28 Aug 2026

Adhi Yoga forms when the natural benefics — Mercury, Jupiter and Venus — occupy the 6th, 7th and 8th houses counted from the Moon (or, in the wider reading, from the Lagna).

It is the least intuitive of the well-known yogas, because it places benefics in houses normally considered difficult, and that is exactly the point of it.

How Adhi Yoga forms

ConditionRequirement
The grahasThe natural benefics — Mercury, Jupiter, Venus
The housesThe 6th, 7th and 8th counted from the Moon
Reference pointFrom the Moon in the strict reading; Phaladīpikā permits the Lagna as well
MaleficsTheir presence in those houses dilutes the yoga — the classical form wants benefics there

What Adhi Yoga gives

Phaladīpikā describes a commander, a minister or a ruler — renowned, prosperous, wealthy, long-lived and large-souled. In modern terms it is a yoga of institutional authority: the person who ends up running something.

The mechanism is worth seeing. The 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon are the houses of opposition, of others, and of crisis — the three places from which a mind is challenged. Benefics stationed there mean the challenges themselves are benign: opposition that turns out to be useful, partners who cooperate, crises that resolve well.

That is why the result is authority rather than wealth. A person whose difficulties consistently work out in their favour accumulates standing, and does so without the visible struggle that usually accompanies it.

From the Moon or from the Lagna — and why it matters

The strict reading counts the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon; Phaladīpikā permits reckoning from the Lagna as well. The two rarely agree, so a chart can carry Adhi Yoga on one reading and not the other.

This check uses the reading from the Moon, which is the older and stricter of the two. If another source has told you that you have Adhi Yoga and this does not report it, the reference point is the first thing to check.

Where both readings agree — benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon and from the Lagna — the yoga is exceptionally strong and correspondingly rare.

Its opposite: Śakaṭa Yoga

Adhi Yoga has a mirror worth knowing, because the two are often confused. Śakaṭa Yoga forms when the Moon occupies the 6th, 8th or 12th from Jupiter — and it is read as fortune that rises and falls like a cart wheel, never settling.

Phaladīpikā gives it a cancellation in the same breath: Śakaṭa is annulled if the Moon occupies a kendra from the Lagna. That cancellation fires often, which is why Śakaṭa is reported far more than it genuinely applies.

The contrast is instructive. Adhi places benefics in the difficult houses from the Moon and produces steady authority; Śakaṭa places the Moon itself in difficult houses from Jupiter and produces instability. The same three houses, read from different points, give opposite results.

How this check works

Your chart is computed from an astronomical ephemeris on the Lahiri (Citrapakṣa) ayanāṁśa, and the formation rule stated on this page is tested against it directly — the same rule, not a paraphrase. Where the classical texts disagree about a condition, the page names the reading we follow.

Frequently asked questions

What is Adhi Yoga?

A yoga formed when the natural benefics — Mercury, Jupiter and Venus — occupy the 6th, 7th and 8th houses counted from the Moon. Phaladīpikā also permits reckoning it from the Lagna.

What does Adhi Yoga give?

Institutional authority — the classical description is a commander, minister or ruler, renowned, prosperous, long-lived and large-souled. It is a yoga of ending up in charge of something.

Why are benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th considered good here?

Because those are the houses from which a mind is challenged — opposition, others, and crisis. Benefics stationed there make the challenges themselves benign: useful opposition, cooperative partners, crises that resolve well.

Do malefics in those houses cancel Adhi Yoga?

They dilute rather than cancel it. The classical form wants the benefics there; malefics joining them weaken the effect proportionately.

Does having this yoga guarantee the result?

No. A yoga is a promise, and a promise still has to be delivered by a graha capable of delivering it. The classical texts are explicit that a yoga gives its full effect only when the planets forming it are unblemished — not combust, not hemmed by malefics, not debilitated. Most yogas also fruit during the daśā of the planets that form them rather than continuously; the Nābhasa yogas are the stated exception, and their own pages say so.

Which chart is the yoga checked in?

The Rāśi (D-1) chart, which is where the classical definitions are stated. A yoga present in the D-1 and unsupported in the relevant divisional chart is a promise that tends not to ripen, so it is worth checking the varga for the matter concerned.
