The chart

What is known of the life

Chart pointers›
  • Chart pointers (PVNR): PVNR uses Rajiv's D-12 (chart of parents) with the Surya-Chakra (Sudarshan) dasha to time his mother Indira's assassination (31 Oct 1984). In the derived Aries lagna for that year: Venus, the double maraka for Aries, sits in the Aries lagna; Mars + Ketu (violence) occupy the Badhaka sthana (Aquarius) casting rasi-drishti on Aries; and a Saturn–Mars parivartana ("the servant becomes a soldier") = a violent death by her own guards. Without the Mars+Ketu it would have read as natural/illness death, not violence.
At a glance (astrologer's read)›
  • Kind of work: professional pilot first, then politician and head of government — drawn into power by dynastic duty rather than ambition.
  • Fame: India's youngest PM; globally recognized as the son of Indira and grandson of Nehru, and as the leader who launched India's computer/telecom modernization.
  • Position / power: the highest — Prime Minister of India (1984–89), heading the largest parliamentary majority in Indian history (414 of 541 seats).
  • Wealth: dynastic standing, not a self-made commercial fortune; lived the Nehru-Gandhi public-figure life.
  • Legal / negative: the Bofors arms-payoff scandal (personally implicated, posthumously cleared in 2004); the HDW submarine kickbacks; the Shah Bano reversal; the Bhopal disaster occurred on his watch; his "when a big tree falls" remark after the anti-Sikh riots; the costly IPKF intervention in Sri Lanka.
  • Health: robust, athletic, with notably quick reflexes (he physically dodged a rifle-butt blow during the 1987 Colombo guard-of-honour).
  • Death: violent — killed by an LTTE belt-bomb, echoing his mother's assassination.
Life — chronology›
  • 1944-08-20 — born in Bombay to Indira and Feroze Gandhi.
  • 1951 — admitted (with brother Sanjay) to Shiv Niketan school; later St. Columba's (Delhi), Welham Boys', then The Doon School, Dehradun (from 1954).
  • 1961 — left Doon School; 1962–65 attended Trinity College, Cambridge, leaving without a degree; 1966 began (and did not finish) mechanical engineering at Imperial College London.
  • 1966 — returned to India; joined the Delhi Flying Club as a trainee pilot.
  • 1968 — married Sonia Maino (Italian-born) after a three-year courtship.
  • 1970 — son Rahul born; 1970 employed as a pilot by Indian Airlines. 1972 — daughter Priyanka born. He deliberately stayed out of politics, flying domestic routes.
  • 1980-06-23 — brother Sanjay Gandhi died in a plane crash; the dynasty's heir-apparent was gone.
  • 1981-02-16 — entered politics, addressing a national farmers' rally in Delhi.
  • 1981-08-17 — won the Amethi by-election by ~237,000 votes; took oath as MP; soon put in charge of the Indian Youth Congress.

  • 1985–86 — after the Supreme Court's Shah Bano judgment, his government enacted the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act 1986, overturning it — a lasting controversy.
  • 1986 — created MTNL, expanded the PCO network, and brought in Sam Pitroda to lead technology missions (telecom, water, literacy, immunization, dairy, oilseeds); slashed duties on computers — launching India's IT and telecom revolution; announced the National Policy on Education and the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya schools.
  • 1987-07 — signed the Indo–Sri Lanka Accord and sent the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF), drawing India into open conflict with the LTTE; on 30 July 1987 a Sri Lankan honour-guard struck at him with a rifle, which he dodged.
  • 1987 — the Bofors scandal broke open (alleged kickbacks on a Swedish howitzer deal via Ottavio Quattrocchi); Finance/Defence Minister V. P. Singh broke with him over Bofors and HDW.

  • 1990–91 — undertook the Bharat Yatra and Sadbhavna Yatra across the country, rebuilding for the next election.
  • 1991-05-21 — assassinated at a campaign rally in Sriperumbudur (~40 km from Madras): a 22-year-old LTTE bomber ("Dhanu") bent to touch his feet and detonated an RDX belt, killing Rajiv and at least 14 others. LTTE chief Prabhakaran had ordered it in revenge for the IPKF.
  • 1991-05-24 — state funeral attended by dignitaries from 60+ countries; cremated at Vir Bhumi on the Yamuna; posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna; 21 May observed as Anti-Terrorism Day.
Life by area›

Nature & personality

  • Shy, soft-spoken, courteous — schoolmates and observers noted his "winsome smile, charm and decency." Genuinely uninterested in politics until duty forced him; a competent pilot who liked photography, gadgets and aviation. As PM he was earnest and modernizing but, by his own and critics' account, a relative novice — surrounded by a "Doon School" coterie — who learned statecraft on the job. Athletic, with notably quick reflexes.

Profession, fame & status

  • Professional Indian Airlines pilot (1970–80) who became Prime Minister within four years of entering politics. His signature legacy is dragging India toward the modern era — computers, telecom, satellites, the PCO booth, the votes-at-18 reform, and the push for grassroots Panchayati Raj — earning him the tag "father of India's IT/telecom revolution." His government's record majority gave him an unrivaled mandate, partly squandered amid scandals.

Wealth & money

  • Dynastic position rather than self-made wealth; he lived the standard Nehru-Gandhi public life, not as a tycoon.

Marriage, relationships & children

  • Married Sonia (1968); a notably stable, devoted marriage that kept Sonia largely out of the public eye during his premiership. Two children: Rahul (1970) and Priyanka (1972), both later major Congress figures. Sonia entered politics only years after his death and led the Congress for decades.

Health

  • Fit and athletic; no major chronic illness on record. His sole "near-miss" was the 1987 Colombo rifle-butt attack, which he physically evaded.

Legal troubles / controversies

  • Bofors dominates his record — the alleged arms-deal kickbacks that helped cost him the 1989 election (he was posthumously cleared in 2004). Also the Shah Bano reversal (seen as appeasement), the Bhopal aftermath, the HDW submarine commissions, his ill-judged "when a big tree falls, the earth shakes" line about the anti-Sikh riots, and the bloody, unpopular IPKF mission that ultimately got him killed.

Death & legacy

  • Assassinated by the LTTE on 21 May 1991, a violent end mirroring his mother's. Remembered as the leader who pointed India toward the 21st century in technology, communications and youth participation, even as his term was clouded by Bofors. His widow and children continued the dynasty.
PVNR's astrological notes (secondary)›
  • The lesson's purpose is method: timing and characterizing a parent's death from the native's D-12 (chart of parents) via the Surya-Chakra (Sudarshan) dasha, then deriving the parent's working lagna and reading the maraka + violence factors there.
  • For Indira's 1984 assassination, the derived Aries lagna carries Venus (the double maraka for Aries) in the lagna; Mars + Ketu in the Badhaka (Aquarius) casting rasi-drishti on Aries; and a Saturn–Mars parivartana ("servant turns soldier") — together a violent assassination by her own guards. PVNR stresses that without the Mars+Ketu the same setup would read as natural death; the violence is the nodal/Mars overlay. Rajiv's chart is the worked example; Indira's actual assassination is the validation.
