At a glance (astrologer's read)›
  • Kind of work: industrialist — builder and operator of very large capital projects: petrochemicals, oil refining, then telecom and retail. An engineer by training who runs execution himself; not a financier and not a founder from nothing, but the heir who multiplied what he received many times over.
  • Fame: a household name in India; known worldwide as Asia's richest man and for the scale of his family's weddings and of his home, Antilia.
  • Position / power: chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries since 2002; controlling shareholder of India's most valuable company; great influence over Indian business and policy.
  • Wealth: immense — fortune of the order of US$90–110 billion in the 2020s; briefly among the world's ten richest. Source: his shareholding in Reliance Industries.
  • Legal / negative: the bitter public feud with his younger brother Anil after their father died without a will (2002–2005), settled by their mother splitting the group; later litigation between the brothers over gas supply; a 2021 security scare when an explosives-laden vehicle was found near his home.
  • Health: nothing major on the public record.
  • Death: n/a (living).

Life by area›

Nature & personality

Reserved, soft-spoken, shy in public and a poor public speaker by his own account — the opposite of his flamboyant younger brother. Vegetarian and teetotal, closely attached to his mother, and a traditional family man. In work he is known for thinking in very large scale, for long patience with capital-heavy projects, and for holding detail himself.

Profession, fame & status

He did not found Reliance but most of what it is today was built on his watch. His mark is backward integration and scale: from textiles to polyester, to petrochemicals, to refining, to oil and gas exploration — each step making the raw material of the last. After the 2005 split he re-entered telecom from nothing and within a few years of Jio's 2016 launch led the market. Retail followed the same pattern.

Wealth & money

The wealth is inherited at the root and multiplied by him. It sits almost entirely in his family's roughly half share of Reliance Industries. He has been India's richest person for most years since 2008, and Asia's richest for many of them.

Marriage, relationships & children

Married Nita Dalal in 1985, a match encouraged by his father; she later became a public figure in her own right through the Reliance Foundation, the Mumbai Indians and education. Three children — twins Akash and Isha (1991) and Anant (1995) — all now placed in the business.

Family

The defining family event is the break with his brother Anil after their father's death, and its partial mending years later when he settled Anil's debt. His father's memory is central to how he presents the company.

Legal troubles / controversies

The brothers' feud and the gas-price litigation; long-running allegations by critics about Reliance's closeness to government; regulatory disputes over gas output from the KG-D6 field; criticism of the extravagance of Antilia and of the family weddings.
