What is known of the life
Chart pointers›
- Chart pointers (PVNR): Sagittarius lagna 1°20′; lagna lord Jupiter at 0°10′ Virgo. By longitude his Arudha Lagna ≈ 29° Taurus = a literal "bull" image — the bull-headed, market-bully tycoon. About 6.5 of his 8 planets aspect the 11th-from-Arudha = the definitive "vast gains" signature, PVNR's cleanest validation of the longitude-Arudha method.
At a glance (astrologer's read)›
- Kind of work: trader turned industrialist — yarn and spices first, then textiles ("Vimal"), then a backward-integrated empire of polyester, petrochemicals, refining, oil & gas, power and telecom.
- Fame: a national legend in India — the rags-to-riches archetype, household name, subject of films and case studies; an icon of the self-made entrepreneur.
- Position / power: founder and chairman of the Reliance group; the most powerful private-sector industrialist of his generation; a master of the "License Raj," with formidable political reach.
- Wealth: built India's largest private-sector group and its first private Fortune 500 company. At his death Forbes ranked him 138th in the world, net worth ~$2.9 billion; the empire he left was worth far more and grew into one of the world's largest fortunes under his son Mukesh.
- Legal / negative: ferocious rivalries (the polyester "DMT vs PTA" war with Nusli Wadia / Bombay Dyeing), the Indian Express investigative campaign (1987) alleging stock-market manipulation and policy favouritism, and a 1985 murder-conspiracy accusation against a Reliance manager (never established).
- Health: a paralysing stroke in February 1986 (right side); a second, fatal stroke in 2002.
- Death: a major stroke; comatose for over a week before dying at 69.
Life — chronology›
- 1932-12-28 — born Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani in Chorwad, Junagadh district, Gujarat; third of five children of a poorly-paid village schoolteacher; genuine poverty.
- ~1940s — as a boy runs weekend ventures to help the family — bhajia (fritter) stalls at village fairs, and famously selling snacks to pilgrims at the foot of Girnar Hill.
- ~1948 — forced to leave formal schooling (around matriculation) after his father's health and finances collapse.
- ~1948–49 — at ~16–17 sails to Aden, Yemen (a busy British free port); works as a clerk / petrol-pump attendant for A. Besse & Co., later managing its Shell filling station; learns trade, imports/exports and commodity & currency trading.
- 1955 — marries Kokilaben Patel.
- 1958 — returns to India and founds Reliance Commercial Corporation in Mumbai (a ~350 sq ft room on Narsinatha Street), trading spices (exported to Yemen) and polyester/nylon yarn (imported).
- 1965 — dissolves the early partnership with cousin Champaklal Damani; goes solo.
- 1966 — incorporates Reliance Textiles and sets up a synthetic-fabrics mill at Naroda, near Ahmedabad; launches the "Vimal" brand, which grows into a dominant pan-Indian fabric brand.

- 1980s — aggressive backward integration into petrochemicals and polyester (making his own raw materials); builds the Patalganga complex (construction handed to a 24-year-old Mukesh).
- mid-1980s — the "polyester wars": Reliance's PTA vs Bombay Dyeing's DMT; bitter rivalry with Nusli Wadia.

Life by area›
Nature & personality
The defining self-made man — born into a schoolteacher's poverty, selling fritters to pilgrims as a boy, and willing himself into the front rank of world industry. Audacious, bull-headed (the Taurus Arudha is literal), a visionary risk-taker and an unmatched dealmaker who trusted ordinary investors ("my investors are my biggest bankers") and out-manoeuvred the established business houses.
Profession, fame & status
From yarn-and-spices trader (1958) to the "Vimal" textile brand, to a fully backward-integrated empire of polyester, petrochemicals, refining, oil & gas, power and telecom. Reliance became India's largest private-sector group and its first private Fortune 500 company. His mega-AGMs filled stadiums; the Financial Times called one "the world's largest company AGM." A master of the License Raj with deep political reach.
Wealth & money
He democratised equity in India: the 1977 IPO and the bonus/dividend culture that followed built a retail shareholder base of millions and made Reliance "a people's company." At death Forbes put him 138th globally at ~$2.9 billion; the group he founded grew into one of the planet's great fortunes under Mukesh.
Marriage, relationships & children
Married Kokilaben Patel in 1955. Four children: sons Mukesh and Anil Ambani, daughters Nina and Dipti. Having left no written will, his death triggered a feud between the sons; in June 2005 Kokilaben brokered a split — Mukesh taking oil/gas/petrochemicals/refining (Reliance Industries), Anil taking telecom/power/financial services (the ADAG group).
Health (and accidents)
A stroke in February 1986 left his right side partly paralysed and accelerated the handover to his sons. A second, major stroke in late June 2002 put him in a coma from which he never recovered.
Legal troubles / controversies
The polyester "DMT vs PTA" war with Nusli Wadia/Bombay Dyeing; the 1987 Indian Express investigative campaign alleging stock-market manipulation and policy favouritism; and a 1985 accusation that a Reliance manager conspired to kill Wadia (never established in court). His style — bending the License Raj and out-lobbying rivals — was as celebrated as it was attacked.
Death & legacy
Died 6 July 2002 at 69 of a stroke, last rites by Mukesh. He is remembered as the father of India's equity culture and of its largest private enterprise; honoured posthumously with the Padma Vibhushan (2016). The empire split between his sons, with Mukesh's Reliance Industries going on to make him, in time, one of the richest men in the world.
PVNR's astrological notes (secondary)›
- His longitude-based Arudha Lagna ≈ 29° Taurus gives a literal "bull" image — the bull-headed market-bully tycoon — and is PVNR's cleanest illustration of reading the AL's sign as a public persona (better-fitting than the textbook Pisces-sage image of a Sagittarius lagna).
- From that AL, the 11th house (29° Pisces) is aspected by essentially every planet — PVNR counts ≈6.5 of 8 planets influencing it = Parashara's "many/all planets aspect the 11th from AL = very financially successful." Supporting padas land in trines: A2 (wealth-pada) in the 5th from AL, A10 (career-pada) in the 9th from AL. PVNR treats this as a more overwhelming fit than even Bill Gates's chart.
