The chart
What is known of the life
Chart pointers›
- Year, time and place are exactly as in PVNR's Lesson 16 ("Dec 25 1926, 5:10 AM, Gwalior"); the lesson gives no coordinates (standard Gwalior coordinates used). The public record gives the year as 1924, and PVNR himself remarks (Lesson 21) that "Vajpayee has 2 different years" in circulation. The reading PVNR gives — Mercury and Saturn both in lagna — holds only for 1926 (Scorpio lagna ~14° with Mercury ~20° and Saturn ~9° Scorpio); on 25 December 1924 at the same time Saturn is in Libra and Mercury in Sagittarius. All ages below are by the public (1924) record.
- Chart pointers (PVNR): Atmakaraka Mercury and Putrakaraka Saturn together in Lagna = Maharaja Yoga (Parasara's AK+PuK yoga) — rise through a commanding following, i.e. democratic election. Mercury AK = a flexible, adaptable soul that goes by its company; Saturn is that company → more disciplined and ascetic.
At a glance (astrologer's read)›
- Kind of work: politics by speech — parliamentarian for half a century, party builder, foreign minister, prime minister; alongside it, journalism and Hindi poetry. A Mercury life: the spoken word was his instrument.
- Fame: one of the best-loved Indian politicians across party lines; called "the right man in the wrong party" by opponents; the finest Hindi orator of his generation.
- Position / power: head of government three times; leader of a 20-plus-party coalition he held together for a full term; took India openly nuclear.
- Wealth: modest. A salaried public life, no business interests, no personal fortune on record.
- Legal / negative: arrested in 1942 (23–24 days) and jailed through the Emergency (1975–77). Controversy over his 1942 court statement; criticism for not removing the Gujarat chief minister after the 2002 riots; the Tehelka (2001) and coffin-purchase scandals touched his government, not him personally.
- Health: reported to have had only one working kidney for decades; both knees replaced (2000, 2001); a stroke in 2009 took his speech; diabetes and dementia in the last decade, lived wholly out of public view.
- Death: slow and natural, at 93, after nine years of silence.

Life by area›
Nature & personality
Genial, witty, patient, a man of long pauses and exact words; a moderate temperament inside a hard-line movement. Loved food, poetry and company. Avoided personal attack in debate and kept friends in every party. Slow to decide and slower to break with colleagues.
Profession, fame & status
Elected ten times to the Lok Sabha and twice to the Rajya Sabha between 1957 and 2009. Built the Jana Sangh and then the BJP from the margin to power over four decades in opposition. As prime minister: the 1998 nuclear tests, the Lahore bus and the Kargil victory, the Golden Quadrilateral highways and rural-roads scheme, telecom reform, disinvestment, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and the opening with the United States. His rise rested on a popular following and on allies who trusted him personally.
Wealth & money
No fortune. Lived in government accommodation; his declared assets were a house share in Gwalior and modest savings.
Marriage, relationships & children
Never married. Shared a household for decades with his college friend Rajkumari Kaul and her family; her daughter Namita Bhattacharya was his adopted daughter and lit his pyre. He described himself as "a bachelor, not a celibate."
Health (and accidents)
Reported to have lived for decades with a single working kidney. Osteoarthritis led to two knee replacements while in office. The 2009 stroke ended his speech and public life; diabetes, dementia and repeated infections followed.
Legal troubles / controversies
The 1942 Bateshwar arrest and his statement to the magistrate were used against him in later campaigns. Nineteen months of Emergency detention. As prime minister he was blamed for the Kandahar exchange, the intelligence failure before Kargil, and for leaving Narendra Modi in office in 2002.
Death & legacy
Died 16 August 2018. Remembered as the BJP's consensus builder, the prime minister who made India a declared nuclear power and still went to Lahore, and as a poet (Meri Ikyavan Kavitayen).
PVNR's astrological notes (secondary)›
- The lesson's example of the AK + PuK Raja Yoga (Parasara): Atmakaraka and Putrakaraka together, best in the 1st or 5th, = Maharaja Yoga — the soul joined to its follower-souls, "blind followers," gives rise through a commanding following.
- Mercury = AK; Saturn = PuK — both in Lagna → Maharaja Yoga → "rose through commanding following (democratically elected)."
- Mercury AK → a flexible, adaptable soul that can go either way depending on company; Saturn with Mercury is that company → he becomes more disciplined / ascetic.
- Contrasted with George W. Bush (AK + PiK in lagna = rise through the father): followers versus a godfather.
