Saturn in the 4th house — the house of happiness, held by the planet of sorrow

Updated 28 Aug 2026 · From Sārāvalī and Phaladīpikā

I will not soften this one. The 4th house is called sukha bhāva — the house of plain contentment — and it covers the mother, the home, land and vehicles, and the ability to rest. Saturn is the planet of lack, delay and weight. This is the most direct opposition between a planet and a house anywhere in the twelve.

Both texts say so bluntly. And yet this is also one of the most common placements in the charts of people who end up owning a great deal of property, which tells you the verse is describing the feeling, not the balance sheet.

A placement is one factor among many. Its dignity, its lord, its varga and its daśā all have to agree before it delivers.

What the classical texts say

If Saturn occupies the 4th Bhāva, the native will suffer heart disease, or be broken-hearted, be devoid of relatives, conveyances, wealth, intelligence and happiness, will suffer sickness in boyhood and will have prominent nails and hair.
Sārāvalī, Chapter 30
If Saturn be in the 4th house at birth, the native will be bereft of house, respect and mother. He will be sickly in his childhood. He will also be unhappy.
Phaladīpikā, Chapter 8

Sārāvalī gives the same word two ways — "heart disease, or be broken-hearted". That double reading is deliberate in the original and it is the honest summary of this placement: the physical heart and the emotional one are being described together.

What Saturn in the 4th house actually does

The mother. This is the clearest signal and usually the first thing a person confirms. The mother was unavailable in some real way — working constantly, ill, emotionally distant, widowed, or simply carrying more than she could and having nothing left over. The relationship is rarely hostile. It is more often dutiful, respectful and cold. Many people with this placement realise only in adulthood that they never actually felt looked after.

The home. Early years in a house that was not settled: rented, shared, cramped, moved often, or heavy with someone else's problems. Later on, Saturn being Saturn, property does frequently come — and it comes late, it comes through long payment, and it rarely comes with the feeling of arrival that was expected.

Peace of mind. The hardest part, and the reason this placement matters more than its reputation suggests. The 4th is where a person rests. With Saturn here, rest does not fully land. There is a low background sense of duty unfinished. People with this placement often cannot sit still in their own house without finding a task, and they describe holidays as tiring.

The body. Both texts point at the chest. Take that seriously in the ordinary medical sense — this is a placement where blood pressure, the heart and the lungs deserve monitoring from the forties rather than the sixties. Childhood illness is specifically named by both.

The compensation is genuine and worth stating. Saturn in the 4th produces people who are extraordinarily reliable to live with. Whatever they did not receive, they tend to build for others deliberately.

Saturn in the 4th house for each ascendant

The verse above describes Saturn in the 4th and stops there. But Saturn is not the same planet for everybody. It sits in a different sign for each rising sign, and it owns different houses of your life. This table is computed, not written — find your ascendant in the first column and read across.

Cancer is the best row on this table — Saturn exalted in Libra, owning the 7th and 8th. Libra and Scorpio get Saturn in its own sign. Capricorn is the row that needs care: Saturn debilitated in Aries while ruling the lagna and the 2nd, which puts the self and the family's money both under a fallen planet in the house of happiness.

Which ascendants carry it best

Cancer ascendant gets Saturn exalted in Libra here. It also picks up the 7th and 8th, so the marriage and the in-laws come into the home story more than usual. The exaltation does real work — the mother is still a difficult subject, but the home eventually becomes solid.

Libra and Scorpio ascendants both get Saturn in its own sign, and for Libra it is a yogakāraka — owning both a kendra and a trikona, which is the strongest structural role a planet can hold. A yogakāraka in the 4th builds a house that lasts, even if it takes until the forties.

Capricorn ascendant is the hard row. Saturn is debilitated in Aries, rules the lagna and the 2nd, and sits on happiness. Check for cancellation of the debilitation before reading further — it changes this row substantially when present.

What makes it better, and what makes it worse

Jupiter aspecting the 4th
The strongest relief available for this placement. It does not restore the childhood, but it restores the capacity to be content later, which is what is actually at stake here.
The Moon with Saturn in the 4th
The heaviest combination in this house. The Moon is manas, the feeling mind, and it is also the karaka of the mother — so both significations take the weight at once. Persistent low mood is a real risk and should be treated as a medical matter as much as an astrological one.
Venus in or aspecting the 4th
Comfort and beauty in the home. Softens the austerity. Property and vehicles come more easily.
Mars with Saturn here
Conflict inside the house. Property disputes, especially with relatives, and an atmosphere at home that was tense rather than merely quiet.
Saturn exalted in Libra
Cancer ascendants. The best version of this placement — late, solid, and no longer bitter about the early part.

When it shows up

The childhood signal is already spent by the time anyone reads a page like this. What is still live is the property and the peace of mind, and both move on the daśās of Saturn and of the 4th lord.

Property most often arrives in Saturn's own period or sub-period, which is also when the payment burden is heaviest — the two come together and that is normal for this placement, not a warning sign.

The mother's health becomes a live subject during Saturn's periods and during the transits of Saturn over the 4th house and over the Moon.

What actually helps

Fix the house. Literally. This placement responds to the physical home being put in order in a way that is out of proportion to how small the act seems — repairs finished, clutter cleared, one room that is genuinely yours and genuinely quiet.

Serve the mother while it is possible. Where the relationship is cold rather than broken, this placement improves markedly when the duty is done without waiting for the warmth to arrive first. That is the correct order for Saturn.

Get the heart checked, on schedule, from your forties. Both texts point at the chest and there is no reason to be clever about it.

And accept that rest has to be scheduled rather than felt. People with Saturn in the 4th almost never rest spontaneously. Put it in the calendar like work.

How much of this actually applies to you

The chapter these verses come from closes with its own warning, and it is the most useful line in it: by the strength of the planet, its friendships, the aspects on it and whether it sits exalted or fallen, the result can come out full, half, or not at all. So read the verse as the starting position, not the verdict. A well-placed planet keeps most of the good and sheds much of the harm. A wrecked one does the reverse.

How the chart on this page is computed

Planetary positions come from an astronomical ephemeris and are converted to the sidereal zodiac on the Lahiri ayanāṁśa, with whole-sign houses. The check runs in your browser against our own Parāśara engine. No pre-written results, and no language model anywhere near a calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saturn in the 4th house bad?

It is one of the harder placements, yes. The 4th house is plain contentment — mother, home, rest — and Saturn is the planet of lack and delay, so the opposition is direct. Both Sārāvalī and Phaladīpikā name the mother, childhood illness and unhappiness explicitly. The exception is Cancer ascendant, where Saturn is exalted here, and Libra, where it acts as yogakāraka.

What does Saturn in the 4th house say about the mother?

That she was unavailable in some real way — through work, illness, distance, widowhood, or simply carrying too much. Phaladīpikā says 'bereft of house, respect and mother' directly. The relationship is usually dutiful and cold rather than hostile, and many people only recognise it in adulthood.

Does Saturn in the 4th house give property?

Often, and often a lot — but late, through long payment, and without the sense of arrival that was expected. The verse describes the feeling, not the balance sheet. Saturn delays the 4th house; it does not automatically deny it, and Saturn in its own sign or exalted here can build considerable property.

Why does Saturn in the 4th house affect the heart?

The 4th house rules the chest. Sārāvalī gives the result as 'heart disease, or broken-hearted' — the same word carrying both the physical and the emotional sense. Practically, treat it as a reason to monitor blood pressure and cardiac health from your forties rather than waiting.

Which ascendant is best for Saturn in the 4th house?

Cancer, where Saturn is exalted in Libra. Libra ascendant is next — Saturn is in its own sign there and acts as yogakāraka, owning both a kendra and a trikona. Capricorn is the difficult row, with Saturn debilitated in Aries while ruling the lagna and the 2nd.

What is the remedy for Saturn in the 4th house?

Put the physical home in order — finished repairs, cleared clutter, one genuinely quiet room. Serve the mother without waiting for the relationship to warm up first; that order matters for Saturn. Schedule rest rather than expecting it to happen naturally. And get the heart and blood pressure checked on a fixed schedule.

Do I need my exact birth time for this?

For the birth chart, roughly. The ascendant changes sign about every two hours, so if your time is off by fifteen or twenty minutes the house placements usually still hold. If you are unsure by more than an hour, the house a planet falls in can change completely — get the time rectified against dated events before you rely on any house reading.
