Mundane Charts: PVNR Skeptical (Japan 2011 Unexplained); Kali Yuga Epoch Issue; Prashna Valid. A student asks whether mundane charts can be read. The teacher has tried solar, lunar, monthly, fortnightly and daily charts over 20–25 major events and found nothing consistent; he suspects the year definition itself, because at the start of Kali Yuga the Sun was near 2° Aries and not conjunct the Moon. The Lunar New Year chart for Tokyo is read as a test for the March 2011 earthquake: a malefic Jupiter in lagna and an afflicted Mercury in the triṁśāṁśa can be "explained", but nothing shows the scale, the tsunami or the nuclear leak. Independence charts and praśna (rāśi, D-3, D-9) remain usable. The page then reads a cardiologist's daśāṁśa: lagna lord Mars and 5th lord Sun in the 6th give a rāja yoga in the house of service and show a surgeon, with the 6th-versus-7th (service versus business) rationale, and why the speciality cannot be read. It ends with the correction of the daśāṁśa deities: Brahmā is above, Ananta is below, so Ananta daśāṁśa is patient foundation work and research, while Nirṛti is cutting-edge, barrier-breaking work.

Key principle

I experimented with the solar charts, lunar charts, New Year chart, new month chart, fortnightly charts, daily charts. I didn't really find anything that I thought was far more consistent than what we are used to anyway. We were seeing shapes in clouds earlier. We will stick to natal charts until we have something better to see the mundane charts.

Example Charts

Lunar New Year chart for Tokyo (2010–11)
Mar 16, 2010 · 5:27 AM JST · Tokyo, Japan
Cast for the capital at the Sun–Moon conjunction in Pisces. Rāśi: Aquarius rises with Jupiter, the 2nd and 11th lord, within a degree of the lagna; compressed Viṁśottarī from the Moon gives Jupiter daśā in March 2011. D-30: Gemini rises with Jupiter, the bādhaka lord, in lagna, and lagna lord Mercury is in an earth sign. The teacher's point is that none of this shows an event of that scale.

Example chart — cardiologist, Aries lagna (1970)
Aug 5, 1970 · 11:03 PM IST · India
Open the D-10. Aries rises. Lagna lord Mars and 5th lord Sun are in the 6th (Virgo): a rāja yoga in the house of service, and the surgeon. Saturn, the 10th lord, is in the 10th in Capricorn. Venus, the 7th lord, is in the 3rd. Sun and Mars fall in Nirṛti's daśāṁśa, Saturn in Ananta's. The class used Sūrya Siddhānta positions (lagna 1°31′ Aries) and had Rāhu in the 3rd with Venus; the chart cast here puts Rāhu in the 2nd with the exalted Moon.

Mundane Charts — Not Convinced

A student asks whether mundane charts can be read. Yes in principle, but the teacher has not convinced himself of any method.

"I experimented with the solar charts, lunar charts, New Year chart, new month chart, fortnightly charts, daily charts. I experimented with Navamsa Pravesha charts… I didn't really find anything that I thought was far more consistent than what we are used to anyway."

What may be wrong with the year definition

  • At the start of the current Kṛta Yuga cycle Sun, Moon and the rest were all at 0°.
  • At the start of Kali Yuga, per Sūrya Siddhānta, they were close to 0° but not at it. The Sun was at about 2° Aries, and Sun and Moon were not conjunct. Only the mean Sun and mean Moon, without correction, were at 0°.
  • Every solar or lunar year we count is a subdivision of Kali Yuga: first year, second year, and so on.
  • So "Sun enters Aries" (solar new year) and "Sun and Moon conjoin in Pisces" (lunar new year) may not be the right definitions for this yuga. They may have applied in Kṛta Yuga. Things go out of sync during the cycle and fall back in sync at its end.
  • Options he has not tested: start the year when the Sun returns to the longitude it had at the start of Kali Yuga (about 2° Aries), or when the Sun–Moon angle matches what it was then.
  • He has tested only the standard definitions.

"I am not sure if the tradition of finding these lunar and solar new years is uncorrupted today. We may be celebrating in a slightly different way as opposed to what it should be."

What can be used

  • A country's independence chart, if known accurately (India, Pakistan). Those are standard.
  • Praśna. A student asks whether this applies to praśna charts: yes. In praśna all three are seen — rāśi, D-3 and D-9 — and they can be taken as they are.

The test he ran, and suggests

  • Take 20 major mundane events for various countries — the Iraq war, Pearl Harbor, September 11, governments falling, a military coup — crises and major developments both.
  • Cast the lunar and solar new-year charts for each and see whether anything is consistent.
  • He took 20–25 events and looked at them neutrally. Nothing stood out the way it does in natal charts. Something is still missing in mundane charts.

"We were seeing shapes in clouds earlier. We can, if we please, continue to see shapes in clouds. But instead, let us actually try to see something more genuine. We will stick to natal charts… until we have something better to see the mundane charts."

The Lunar New Year Chart for Tokyo and the 2011 Earthquake

The class is held days after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. There is no accurate chart for Japan, so as an exercise the previous Lunar New Year chart is cast for Tokyo: 16 March 2010, 5:27 AM. (It had first been cast for Boston; the place must be the capital of the country.)

What the chart shows

  • Compressed Viṁśottarī from the Moon: in March 2011 the cycle has come round to Jupiter daśā again.
  • Rāśi: Jupiter is in lagna, very close to the lagna degree. He is the 2nd and 11th lord — a functional malefic. (Aquarius rises.)
  • Triṁśāṁśa (D-30), the chart of evils and vulnerabilities: lagna is Gemini and Jupiter, the bādhaka lord, is in lagna.
  • In the same D-30, lagna lord Mercury is afflicted by the 6th and 8th lords, Mars and Saturn. Mercury is a bhū graha and sits in a bhū rāśi. A bhū graha in a bhū rāśi afflicted by two malefics is a bad yoga: an earth-related problem is possible.
  • One could go on: exalted Venus is involved — but Venus is the 5th lord and his aspect is not bad — "but he is with Gulika".

Why this proves nothing

  • A malefic or bādhaka Jupiter in lagna shows "some problem". It could not have predicted something of this magnitude.
  • Why this country? Why so disastrous? Why a tsunami as well? Why the nuclear leak? What should stand out is a water problem, an earth problem and the nuclear danger. A student suggests Rāhu and Ketu should be involved; the teacher agrees. They are not.
  • What happened on the ground is not reflected in the rāśi, navāṁśa or triṁśāṁśa, in the lunar or the solar new-year chart, with Dṛk Siddhānta or Sūrya Siddhānta.

"Bottom line is you can explain. But what I am saying is I am not convinced. Nothing really stands out."

"The tendency is, when some major event happens like the tsunami or earthquake, we want to justify it. We want to see it in the chart and justify it. But the thing is we don't really have tools to see."

Example Chart — a Cardiologist (1970)

A student brings the chart of a medical doctor in India who wants to come to the US as a research scholar and asks whether it is a good move.

  • Birth: 5 August 1970, 11:03 PM IST (5h30m east of GMT), India.
  • Lagna: Aries 1°31′ — the very beginning of Aries. Moon: 28°10′ Leo.
  • Because lagna is in the first degree and a half of Aries, Aries also rises in the navāṁśa, daśāṁśa and caturthāṁśa.
  • Profession: MD, cardiologist. He runs his own clinic and also works in a hospital.
  • Marriage: 27 August 1998.
  • Question (asked in March 2011): going to the US as a research scholar.

The class first checks that the chart explains what is already known — profession and marriage — and only then reads the move abroad.

Daśāṁśa — Service or Business, and the Surgeon

What is in the D-10

  • 6th house (Virgo): lagna lord Mars and 5th lord Sun. Lagna lord with 5th lord is a rāja yoga, and it falls in the 6th house of service.
  • 10th house (Capricorn): 10th lord Saturn in his own house. Strong.
  • 2nd house: exalted Moon — "not really that interesting".
  • 3rd house: 7th lord Venus and, in the class chart, Rāhu as 11th lord. (A modern ephemeris puts Rāhu one sign back, in the 2nd with the Moon. Venus is in the 3rd either way.)

A student's question: the 6th is so strong, yet he runs his own clinic

The rationale for 7th = business and 6th = service:

  • The 6th is the house of overcoming obstacles, of fighting. A person employed by someone else is at the whims of the other person. He does the hard work and solves the problems.
  • The 7th is the house of desires and ambitions. The person running the show may or may not be working hard, but he has strong desires and is pursuing them.
  • What marks a businessman is strong desire pursued. What marks a worker is hard work and problem solving.
  • Someone can run a business and still work very hard. This native works 24/7. His 6th house is that.

What shows the enterprise in this chart:

  • Sun and Mars are both fierce, aggressive planets, and Mars is the kāraka for enterprise, daring and dash. As lagna lord he shows someone dynamic and enterprising.
  • The 7th lord of desire and the 11th lord of gains are together in the 3rd: two kāma-trikoṇa lords in the third kāma trikoṇa. And they are the planets of desire — Rāhu of many desires, Venus of passion.

Sun + Mars = surgeon

  • Mars is the one who goes to war, who is active, who does things. A regular doctor consults; a surgeon operates, does delicate things, uses instruments. Mars shows the surgeon.
  • Sun and Mars in a rāja yoga in the 6th can show a surgeon. On this point the chart is correct.

Why cardiology? — not known

A student asks what shows a cardiologist rather than some other specialist.

"Honestly, I don't think we have enough expertise to say. What I want you to do is study the charts of 10 cardiologists versus 10 immunologists versus 10 anaesthetists. You will see if there is anything common. We haven't really done any such thorough study."

  • "Moon is the kāraka for the heart, so cardiology" — it does not work like that.
  • Mars shows surgeons. Whether cardiology or some other "-ology", we do not know.

Daśāṁśa Deities — Nirṛti and Ananta, and a Correction

The daśāṁśa deities had not been looked at for a while. They still apply — all of Parāśara's principles still apply.

Sun and Mars in Nirṛti's daśāṁśa

  • Nirṛti: something unconventional, breaking barriers, crossing boundaries.
  • Cutting-edge technology — or underworld and mafia. Things that are very challenging.
  • Here it fits high-tech surgery: the latest technologies, the latest instruments, the latest medical practices.

Saturn in Ananta's daśāṁśa — the correction

  • Earlier teaching, following Sanjay ji: Brahmā shows digging, Ananta shows flying.
  • That was backwards. The Purāṇic story: the Śiva-liṅga grows without end upward and downward. Viṣṇu and Brahmā go to find the ends, and Brahmā lies that he found one. It is Viṣṇu who takes the Varāha form and digs down. Brahmā takes the form of a swan and goes up.
  • In every pūjā, when the dikpālakas are invoked, Brahmā is the ūrdhva-dikpālaka (above) and Ananta the adho-dikpālaka (below).
  • And by logic: Ananta-Śeṣa is at the very bottom of the universe, supporting all 14 worlds. He is the base for everything else — the patient one who upholds the whole world.

"So Ananta daśāṁśa shows some research work which lays the foundation. It is basically foundation work — not necessarily research, but patiently laying the foundation of something."

Reading the two together

  • Saturn in the 10th as 10th lord: patient work, work where patience and skill are needed, strict guidelines.
  • Saturn in Ananta daśāṁśa shows the research work. Sun and Mars show the surgery.
