BPHS Ch.14 Verses 1-4: Benefics in/Aspecting 3H=Siblings+GENUINE Boldness(vs Malefics=Arudha Image Only); Verse 2: 3L+Mars Aspecting 3H=Good Siblings; Verse 3: 3L+Mars in Malefic Signs=Destroys; Verse 4: Female Planet in 3H=Sisters; Mrutavastha BOTH=Damage(Exaltation Can Override)
BPHS Chapter 14 (Sahaja Bhava Phaladhyayam), the opening verses. Verse 1: a natural benefic occupying or aspecting the 3rd house gives siblings and actual boldness; the boldness malefics give is the perceived kind, read from the 3rd from Arudha Lagna. Verses 2–3: the 3rd lord with karaka Mars, aspecting or occupying the 3rd (together or separately), gives good results for siblings; the same two with malefic planets or in malefic signs (kshetra = sign, not house) kill siblings. Verse 4: a female planet owning or occupying the 3rd shows a sister, a male sign or planet a brother, so in Drekkana and Saptamsa look at the house itself and its occupants, not only its lord; mixed influences are judged by strength. Last, the 3rd lord and Mars both in Mrutavastha (last 6° of an odd sign, first 6° of an even sign) destroy siblings. PVNR reads “mruta” as the avastha, not Santhanam’s 8th house, and applies it only when affliction backs it.
Key principle
Benefic planets when associated with any house bring good results to that house. The lord of the house also brings good results, especially when he is associated with the karaka.
Verses 1–4 — Benefics, the 3rd Lord with Mars, Sex of Siblings, Mrutavastha
Chapter 14 in Santhanam's version. Atha vikrama bhavasya phalam vakshyami — "I am going to tell you the result of the 3rd house."
Verse 1: Natural Benefics in or Aspecting the 3rd House → Siblings and Bravery
"Sahaje saumya yug drushte, bhratruman vikrami narah"
- Sahaje = in the 3rd house
- Saumya = natural benefic; yuk = occupied by; drushte = aspected by
- Bhratruman = endowed with siblings. Bhratru literally means brother; read it as sibling.
- Vikrami = bold
Rule: If the 3rd house contains or is aspected by a natural benefic, the person has siblings and is brave.
How this differs from what was taught before:
- The usual understanding: natural malefics with the 3rd house make a person bold. That applies more to the 3rd from Arudha Lagna — looks and perception. Malefics there give the impression of somebody very bold.
- Here Parashara says benefics occupying or aspecting the 3rd house give boldness.
"This is not really a perception of boldness. This is actually boldness, strong initiative."
Verse 2: 3rd Lord with Mars, Aspecting or Occupying the 3rd House → Good Results
"Sabhaumo bhratru bhavesho, bhratru bhavam prapashyati, bhratru kshetra gato vapi, bhratru bhavam vinirdishet"
- Sabhaumo = along with Mars (Bhauma = Mars)
- Bhratru bhavesho = the lord of the 3rd house
- Prapashyati = aspects the 3rd house
- Bhratru kshetra gato vapi = or has gone into the sign holding the 3rd house
Whether the verse means "and" or "or" between "with Mars" and "aspects the 3rd" is not clear. PVNR takes it as "and" for now.
Rule: If the 3rd lord is accompanied by Mars and either aspects or occupies the 3rd house, good results of the 3rd house should be told — siblings will be there, there will be happiness from siblings.
This verse is not about natural benefics. It is about Mars himself and the lord of the house.
"Benefic planets when associated with any house bring good results to that house. The lord of the house also brings good results, especially when he is associated with the karaka. The 3rd house karaka is Mars. That is why being with Mars is important."
Verse 3: The Same Two in Malefic Company or Malefic Signs → They Kill Siblings
"Papa yogena tau, papa kshetra yogena va punah, utpannan sahajan sadyo nihantarau na samshayah"
- Papa yogena = combining with malefic planets
- Tau = "those two". The verse does not name them. Parashara uses the dual number — not singular, not plural — so he still means the two planets of the previous verse: the 3rd lord and Mars.
- Papa kshetra yogena = association with a malefic sign. Kshetra literally means sign, not house. This is not about the 6th or 8th house.
- Scorpio is a malefic sign. Pisces is a benefic sign.
Rule: If the 3rd lord and Mars are either afflicted by malefic planets or occupying a malefic sign, those planets kill the siblings — destruction, death, bad results relating to siblings.
He did not say this about the natural benefics of verse 1.
"Natural benefics associated with any house is good for that house, and the lord of the house or karaka, if they are associated with it, it is good, but if they are afflicted, it is bad. So that is the lesson so far."
Must the 3rd Lord and Mars Be Together?
A student asked whether verses 2 and 3 need the two planets together. It is open to interpretation.
- Sabhaumo literally means "along with Mars" — the 3rd lord is with Mars.
- But sa can mean "along with" without meaning "joined by": the 3rd lord aspects the 3rd house along with Mars. They can be in different houses.
- Example: Sagittarius is the 3rd house and Jupiter the 3rd lord. Jupiter is in Leo and aspects Sagittarius. Mars is in Virgo and aspects Sagittarius. This also qualifies.
So: the 3rd lord and Mars, together or separately, aspecting or occupying the 3rd house → results favourable to the 3rd house. The two afflicted by malefic signs or malefic planets → bad results. If one is afflicted by malefics and the other is with benefics, you have to judge.
Verse 4: Female and Male Planets → Sisters and Brothers
"Stri graho bhratru bhavesho, stri graho bhratru bhavagah, bhagini syat tatha bhrata pum gruhe pum graho yadi"
- Stri graha = female planet. Venus is a female planet, Moon is a female planet.
- Bhagini = sister
- Pum gruhe pum graho = a male sign or a male planet
Rules:
- A female planet owning or occupying the 3rd house → the person will have a sister.
- A male sign or a male planet associated → predict a brother.
- So look at the occupants of the 3rd house and the lord of the 3rd house, and see whether the male or the female influence is greater.
What this adds to the Drekkana and Saptamsa method:
This is like what was done in Saptamsa and Drekkana to see individual children and siblings. There the house for that child or sibling was found (counting forward or backward by whether the lagna is odd or even), and then only its lord was examined: the sign he occupies (male or female), whether he is a male or female planet, and whether the planets with him are male or female.
- Saptamsa example: Leo lagna, first child from the 5th house, Sagittarius. See where Jupiter is. Jupiter in Libra → odd sign → male. Jupiter with Mars → male planet → male. Jupiter alone → he is himself a male planet → male.
- Drekkana example: Leo lagna, first younger sibling from Libra; lord Venus. Venus in Taurus with Moon → Moon shows female, Taurus shows female, but Moon is exalted and an exalted planet shows male. One indication for male, two for female.
The extra from this verse: look at the house itself too — Sagittarius or Libra in these examples — not only its lord. A male or female planet sitting in that sign can change the result. Parashara says it specifically: stri graho bhratru bhavagah, a female planet gone into the 3rd house.
"Apart from bhratru bhavesha, bhratru bhava is also important."
A student summed the addition up as "the 3rd sign being male or female". PVNR corrected him: also the 3rd house containing a male or female planet, which was not looked at before.
Mixed Influences — Judge by Strength
"Mishre mishra phalam vachyam, bala-abala vinirnayat"
With mixed influences, a mixed result should be pronounced. Judge the strengths and weaknesses of the planets involved carefully, then draw the conclusion.
3rd Lord and Mars in Mrutavastha → Siblings Destroyed
"Mrutau kuja trutiyeshau, sahodara vinashakau"
- Mrutau = dead (dual)
- Kuja = Mars; trutiyesha = 3rd lord
- Sahodara vinashakau = the two destroy siblings
What does a "dead" planet mean? Santhanam's interpretation: the 3rd lord and Mars together in the 8th house. PVNR does not follow it. The only context in which the word mruta is used for a planet is Mrutavastha, so Parashara is probably speaking of that avastha.
The verse does not say "and" or "or", but the way the two words are compounded it is probably "and".
Rule: If Mars and the 3rd lord are both in Mrutavastha, they cause destruction to siblings.
The age avasthas — divide a sign into five parts of 6°:
| Degrees in Sign | Odd Signs | Even Signs |
|---|---|---|
| 0°–6° | Bala (child) | Mruta (dead) |
| 6°–12° | Kumara (adolescent) | Vriddha (old) |
| 12°–18° | Yuva (youthful) | Yuva (youthful) |
| 18°–24° | Vriddha (old) | Kumara (adolescent) |
| 24°–30° | Mruta (dead) | Bala (child) |
- Bala: a child, very young.
- Kumara: adolescent — knows more than the child, but probably more troublesome than the child.
- Yuva: fully mature and experienced, and at the same time full of energy.
- Vriddha: very experienced but lacking energy, losing focus and concentration.
- Mruta: dead. Last 6° of an odd sign, first 6° of an even sign.
Caveat: use this with a pinch of salt. If Mars and the 3rd lord are in Mrutavastha but one is exalted and the other in Moolatrikona, you would probably not apply the result.
"Whenever something like destruction of siblings is being talked about, you have to take it with a pinch of salt and expect some affliction to trigger it."
