The Five Elements of Muhurta
Tithi (lunar day)
Moon-Sun distance · 30 per month
Each of the 30 lunar days carries a ruling deity and a distinct quality. Tithi governs the water element and material prosperity — the right tithi feeds the activity.
Vara (weekday)
Planetary lord of the day
Each weekday belongs to a planet. Sunday (Sun) favors authority; Monday (Moon) suits domestic acts; Thursday (Jupiter) is best for religious and educational starts; Friday (Venus) for marriage.
Nakshatra (birth star)
Moon's position among 27 stars
The nakshatra rules the air element and strength of the undertaking. Nav Tara — counting from your own birth star — personalises this: your Sampat, Saadhana, and Mitra stars are naturally auspicious days.
Yoga (luni-solar yoga)
Sun + Moon longitude sum
The 27 yogas bind all five elements. Siddha, Shubha, Amrita and a few others are excellent; Vishkamba, Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are avoided for new starts.
Karana (half-tithi)
Half a tithi · 11 types
Karanas govern the earth element and practical achievement. Fixed karanas like Chatushpada and Naga are inauspicious for most new ventures; movable karanas favour action.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is muhurta in Vedic astrology?
Muhurta is electional astrology — choosing the most auspicious moment to begin an important activity. A good muhurta doesn't guarantee success, but it aligns the natural cosmic forces of the day (tithi, nakshatra, vara, yoga, karana) with your intention, giving the activity its best start. PVNR describes it as planting the seed in fertile soil.
How does Nav Tara personalise the muhurta?
Nav Tara (nine stars) counts from your birth nakshatra to the nakshatra of the day. The 2nd (Sampat — wealth), 4th (Kshema — wellbeing), 6th (Saadhana — achievement), 8th (Mitra — friendship) and 9th (Param Mitra — best friend) positions are inherently auspicious for you regardless of the general nakshatra quality. The 3rd (Vipat — danger), 5th (Pratyak — obstacle) and 7th (Naidhana — crisis) are cautionary.
What are the 30 muhurta periods?
Each day is divided into 30 named muhurta windows of roughly 48 minutes each — 15 during the day (from sunrise to sunset) and 15 at night. Each period has a ruling deity and a natural quality. Abhijit, the 8th day-period centred around solar noon, is universally considered the most auspicious and overrides most negative combinations.
How accurate are the scores?
Scores combine seven factors with activity-specific weights: Nav Tara (personal birth star), nakshatra, tithi, vara, yoga, karana, and Moon's position from the natal Moon sign. Hard blocks apply — a Gandanta Moon (water-fire cusp) caps at 40; any single 'avoid' element caps at 50. The output reflects classical PVNR principles from Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach Ch.36 and Book 2 Lesson 46.
Why does the calculator need my birth chart?
Without a birth chart the tool gives general panchanga quality. With your chart it personalises Nav Tara (which nakshatra days are auspicious for you specifically), evaluates whether transiting planets occupy your 8th house in the muhurta chart, and checks whether the hora lord is a yogakaraka or malefic for your lagna.
