Viṁśāṁśa Chart Calculator — your D-20, the chart of worship and sādhanā

Updated 28 Aug 2026

The Viṁśāṁśa is the twentieth division and the chart of upāsanā — spiritual practice, worship, and the actual form a person's inner life takes.

It is the chart that answers a question the birth chart cannot: not whether someone is religious, but how they practise, toward what, and whether the practice goes anywhere. Two people with identically pious birth charts can have completely different Viṁśāṁśas, and the difference shows up as the difference between devotion and study, or between ritual and silence.

Cast your Viṁśāṁśa (D-20)

Enter date, time and place of birth. The D-20 is computed from your sidereal longitudes — the chart and the full placement table appear below.

Not sure of your birth time? Correct it from your life events — a few minutes changes the navāṁśa, and every reading with it.

We use this to find correct time zone and coordinates for your janam kundli.

How the Viṁśāṁśa is constructed

Each sign is divided into twenty parts of 1°30' each.

Movable signs
Counting begins from Aries.
Fixed signs
Counting begins from Sagittarius.
Dual signs
Counting begins from Leo.
Twenty presiding deities
The text names a goddess for each division — Kālī, Gaurī, Jayā, Lakṣmī, Vijayā, Vimalā, Satī, Tārā, Jvālāmukhī, Śvetā and the rest for an odd sign, with a different set of twenty for an even one. That the presiding powers of this chart are all forms of the Goddess is itself the statement about what the chart is for.

Read this chart on its own

A rule worth stating firmly, because it is broken constantly by software: the D-20 should not be folded into a general per-house reading. Ordinary house analysis of a topic uses the birth chart and its confirming division. The Viṁśāṁśa is not a confirming chart for anything else — it is a chart about one subject, and its houses mean what they mean only within that subject.

A malefic in the 7th of the D-20 says nothing about your marriage. It says something about obstruction in practice, or about the form the practice takes in relation to a teacher or a tradition. Read the chart in its own terms or do not read it.

How to read the D-20

Begin with the D-20 Lagna and its lord — the practising self, the person as they are when they turn inward. Then the 5th house, which carries mantra and the merit that makes practice possible, and the 9th, which carries the teacher, the lineage and the tradition received.

Jupiter and Ketu are the two grahas to watch. Jupiter shows the received tradition, the scripture, the formal path; Ketu shows what happens when the person stops wanting the world's answers. Ketu in a spiritual house of the D-20 is one of the more reliable indications of genuine, sustained practice rather than intermittent interest.

The 12th of the D-20 is the house of the final result — dissolution, surrender, the point where practice stops being something you do. In a chart where the 12th of the D-20 is strong and well-supported, the practice tends to deepen with age rather than lapse.

The Viṁśāṁśa at a glance

Every figure here is specific to this division. The Vimśopaka rows give the share of the twenty-point strength score the Viṁśāṁśa carries in each classical scheme — a blank means the division is not counted in that scheme at all.

Counted only in the full sixteen-division scheme. That is a statement about how the tradition ranks it — real, but supporting rather than decisive.

How accurate your birth time needs to be for the Viṁśāṁśa

The Rāśi Lagna moves through a whole sign in roughly two hours, which is why the birth chart tolerates an approximate time. This division cuts each sign into 20, so the D20 Lagna moves to a new sign about 6 minutes — and the planets near a boundary shift with it. If your recorded time is uncertain by more than that, treat the D20 Lagna and any house-based conclusion drawn from it as provisional, and rectify the time against dated life events before relying on it. Sign placements of the slower grahas stay stable much longer than the Lagna does.

How this is computed

Positions come from an astronomical ephemeris, converted to the sidereal zodiac on the Lahiri (Citrapakṣa) ayanāṁśa and computed by our own Parāśara engine — no pre-written results, and no language model anywhere near a number. Where the classical texts disagree, this page names the convention we follow instead of quietly picking one.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Vimsamsa (D20) chart show?

Spiritual practice and worship — not whether a person is religious, but what form their practice takes, what it is directed toward, and whether it goes anywhere.

How is the D20 chart calculated?

Each sign is divided into twenty parts of 1°30'. Counting begins from Aries for movable signs, from Sagittarius for fixed signs and from Leo for dual signs.

Can I read marriage or career from the D20?

No. The Viṁśāṁśa is a chart about one subject and its houses only mean something within that subject. A difficult 7th house here describes obstruction in practice or a complicated relationship to a teacher — not a marriage.

Which planets matter most in the D20?

Jupiter for the received tradition and formal path, and Ketu for the turn away from worldly answers. Ketu well placed in a spiritual house of the D-20 is among the better indications of sustained practice.

Which ayanāṁśa does this calculator use?

Lahiri (Citrapakṣa). Tropical longitudes from the ephemeris are corrected to the sidereal zodiac before anything else is computed, so signs, divisions, daśā seeds and strengths all rest on the same sidereal frame.

Is it really free, and are my birth details stored?

The calculator is free and needs no account. Your date, time and place are used to compute the result and are kept in your own browser session; they are not attached to a profile unless you choose to sign in and save a chart.
