Ṣoḍaśāṁśa Chart Calculator — your D-16, the chart of vehicles and comforts

Updated 28 Aug 2026

The Ṣoḍaśāṁśa — also called the Kalāṁśa — is the sixteenth division, read for vehicles, conveyances and the comforts that carry you, together with the pleasure or unease they bring.

It looks like a minor chart and is not treated as one by the texts. In the Ṣoḍaśavarga strength scheme it is given 2 of the 20 points, and in the Daśavarga scheme 1½ — more than the Navāṁśa receives in that scheme. Whatever the tradition means by "vehicles", it means something more consequential than a car.

Cast your Ṣoḍaśāṁśa (D-16)

Enter date, time and place of birth. The D-16 is computed from your sidereal longitudes — the chart and the full placement table appear below.

Not sure of your birth time? Correct it from your life events — a few minutes changes the navāṁśa, and every reading with it.

How the Ṣoḍaśāṁśa is constructed

Each sign is divided into sixteen parts of 1°52'30" each, and the sixteen divisions run across twelve signs and then four more.

Movable signs
Counting begins from Aries.
Fixed signs
Counting begins from Leo.
Dual signs
Counting begins from Sagittarius.
The wrap
Because sixteen divisions are spread over twelve signs, the 13th through 16th divisions repeat the first four signs of the sequence. Each division is under two minutes of arc wide, which makes this chart unusually sensitive to birth-time error.

What "vehicle" actually means in this chart

A vāhana is what carries you. In the older sense that includes the animal, the cart, the ship — the means by which a person moves through the world and the comfort or discomfort of that movement. The modern reading of "car" is a narrowing, not a translation.

Read widely, the D-16 is the chart of conveyance and of the pleasures that come with it: travel, the quality of one's daily movement, and by extension the material comforts that surround a life in motion. Its connection to happiness is direct — a person whose D-16 is afflicted is often someone for whom travel, commuting and the machinery of daily life are a persistent source of friction.

This also explains the weight it carries in the strength schemes. A graha comfortably placed here is a graha whose results arrive smoothly; one badly placed produces the same results with constant mechanical trouble around them.

How to read the D-16

Read the 4th house of the D-16 first — vehicles and comforts belong to the 4th, and this is the 4th within the chart that specialises in them. Then the D-16 Lagna and Venus, the natural significator of conveyances and of comfort generally.

Malefics in the 4th of the D-16, or a badly placed 4th lord, is the classical signature for trouble with vehicles: accidents, breakdowns, disputes over ownership. Read it alongside the Chaturthāṁśa, which handles the fixed side of the same 4th-house territory.

Because each division is under two minutes wide, treat a D-16 built on an approximate birth time with real caution. This is one of the charts where rectification is not optional.

The Ṣoḍaśāṁśa at a glance

Every figure here is specific to this division. The Vimśopaka rows give the share of the twenty-point strength score the Ṣoḍaśāṁśa carries in each classical scheme — a blank means the division is not counted in that scheme at all.

How accurate your birth time needs to be for the Ṣoḍaśāṁśa

The Rāśi Lagna moves through a whole sign in roughly two hours, which is why the birth chart tolerates an approximate time. This division cuts each sign into 16, so the D16 Lagna moves to a new sign about 7 minutes — and the planets near a boundary shift with it. If your recorded time is uncertain by more than that, treat the D16 Lagna and any house-based conclusion drawn from it as provisional, and rectify the time against dated life events before relying on it. Sign placements of the slower grahas stay stable much longer than the Lagna does.

How this is computed

Positions come from an astronomical ephemeris, converted to the sidereal zodiac on the Lahiri (Citrapakṣa) ayanāṁśa and computed by our own Parāśara engine — no pre-written results, and no language model anywhere near a number. Where the classical texts disagree, this page names the convention we follow instead of quietly picking one.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Shodasamsa (D16) chart show?

Vehicles and conveyances in the older, wider sense — whatever carries you through the world — together with the comfort or friction that movement brings. It is read for travel, daily movement and material comfort.

How is the D16 chart calculated?

Each sign is divided into sixteen parts of 1°52'30". Counting begins from Aries for movable signs, Leo for fixed signs and Sagittarius for dual signs, with the last four divisions wrapping back to the start of the sequence.

Why does a minor chart like D16 carry 2 points in Shodasavarga?

Because comfort is treated as a real component of a result rather than a decoration on it. A graha well placed here delivers its results smoothly; badly placed, it delivers the same results with constant friction around them.

Which house shows vehicle trouble?

The 4th of the D-16 and its lord, with Venus as significator. Malefics occupying that house, or an afflicted 4th lord, is the classical signature for accidents, breakdowns and disputes over ownership.

Which ayanāṁśa does this calculator use?

Lahiri (Citrapakṣa). Tropical longitudes from the ephemeris are corrected to the sidereal zodiac before anything else is computed, so signs, divisions, daśā seeds and strengths all rest on the same sidereal frame.

Is it really free, and are my birth details stored?

The calculator is free and needs no account. Your date, time and place are used to compute the result and are kept in your own browser session; they are not attached to a profile unless you choose to sign in and save a chart.
