How the Khavedāṁśa is constructed
Each sign is divided into forty parts of 45' each.
- Odd signs
- The forty divisions are distributed successively from Aries.
- Even signs
- The forty divisions are distributed successively from Libra.
- Presiding deities
- Viṣṇu, Candra, Marīci, Tvaṣṭā, Dhātā, Śiva, Ravi, Yama, Yakṣa, Gandharva, Kāla and Varuṇa repeat in the same order through all signs — one of the few divisions where the deity sequence does not reverse.
- Only two starting points
- Because every odd sign starts from Aries and every even sign from Libra, the D-40 has an unusually regular structure. All odd signs share one arrangement and all even signs another.
How to read the D-40, and how far to push it
Read it as a supporting chart for the maternal line, alongside the Dvādaśāṁśa, which carries both parents. Where the D-12 shows the mother as a person and a relationship, the D-40 carries what came down through her — the disposition, advantage or difficulty inherited from that side of a family.
The general use — auspicious and inauspicious effects — is best treated as a background reading rather than as a source of specific predictions. A clean D-40 accompanies a life in which things tend to go well without obvious cause; an afflicted one accompanies persistent low-grade obstruction that never quite has a source you can point to.
Two honest cautions. First, each division is 45 minutes of arc, so a birth time accurate to five minutes still leaves the D-40 uncertain. Second, the classical material on this chart is thin — it is named, its construction is given, its subject is stated, and very little more. Anyone offering you a detailed house-by-house D-40 reading has gone well past what the tradition supports.
The Khavedāṁśa at a glance
Every figure here is specific to this division. The Vimśopaka rows give the share of the twenty-point strength score the Khavedāṁśa carries in each classical scheme — a blank means the division is not counted in that scheme at all.
| D40 | |
|---|---|
| Divisions per sign | 40 |
| Arc of one division | 45' |
| Divisional Lagna changes every | about 3 minutes |
| Vimśopaka weight · Ṣaḍvarga (6) | — |
| Vimśopaka weight · Saptavarga (7) | — |
| Vimśopaka weight · Daśavarga (10) | — |
| Vimśopaka weight · Ṣoḍaśavarga (16) | ½ |
Counted only in the full sixteen-division scheme. That is a statement about how the tradition ranks it — real, but supporting rather than decisive.
How accurate your birth time needs to be for the Khavedāṁśa
The Rāśi Lagna moves through a whole sign in roughly two hours, which is why the birth chart tolerates an approximate time. This division cuts each sign into 40, so the D40 Lagna moves to a new sign about 3 minutes — and the planets near a boundary shift with it. If your recorded time is uncertain by more than that, treat the D40 Lagna and any house-based conclusion drawn from it as provisional, and rectify the time against dated life events before relying on it. Sign placements of the slower grahas stay stable much longer than the Lagna does.
How this is computed
Positions come from an astronomical ephemeris, converted to the sidereal zodiac on the Lahiri (Citrapakṣa) ayanāṁśa and computed by our own Parāśara engine — no pre-written results, and no language model anywhere near a number. Where the classical texts disagree, this page names the convention we follow instead of quietly picking one.
