How the Horā is constructed — and the two conventions
Every sign is halved at 15°. In an odd sign the first half belongs to the Sun and the second to the Moon; in an even sign the order reverses. There are twenty-four horās in the zodiac, and only two lords for all of them.
That creates a practical problem, and the tradition answers it in two ways. The strict Parāśarī reading places every planet into Cancer or Leo — the Moon's sign or the Sun's — producing a chart with only two occupied signs. It is correct, and it is useless for house-based analysis, because there are no houses to speak of.
The other convention spreads the halves across all twelve signs so that an ordinary twelve-house chart results, which can then be read for the 2nd house, the 11th, the ārūḍhas and the rest. This calculator uses the spread form for the chart you see, because that is the form a reader can actually work with; the strict two-sign form remains the right one when the D-2 is being used as an input to a rāśi daśā.
A caution worth stating plainly: some free tools produce a "hora chart" that is neither — planets crammed into Cancer and Leo but presented with houses drawn around them. That combination is not a reading of anything.
What the Sun's half and the Moon's half mean
A graha in the Sun's horā earns and holds through its own initiative, authority and visibility — money that follows from position and from being seen. A graha in the Moon's horā gains through nurture, circulation, the public, and other people's goodwill — money that flows rather than money that is seized.
Neither is better. What matters is the fit with the rest of the chart: a person whose wealth-giving planets sit in the Sun's horā and who is trying to earn through a caretaking profession is working against their own instrument.
Three points to read the D-2 from
Money has more than one truth, and each of these gives a different one.
- From the Lagna
- What you genuinely have. Your real financial self, independent of how it appears — the resources actually at your disposal.
- From the Ārūḍha Lagna
- What the world believes you have. Financial image and reputation, which can run far ahead of or behind the truth in either direction.
- From the ārūḍha padas
- The tangible, pointable facts — the actual balance, the actual company, the actual loss. This is where a financial event becomes visible to other people.
The heavier side of the D-2
Because sampadā also carries the sense of a fall, the Horā shows financial ruin with the same directness that it shows gain. A planet that indicates death in the birth chart can indicate a financial catastrophe here — a finance can die while the person lives on, and the D-2 does not distinguish between the two the way sentiment would prefer.
This is the reason to check the 8th house of the D-2 in any question about money: it is not longevity here, it is financial risk, exposure, speculation and sudden reversal. A strong 8th in the Horā is not a bad thing in itself, but it describes wealth that arrives and departs in shocks rather than accumulating steadily.

Every figure here is specific to this division. The Vimśopaka rows give the share of the twenty-point strength score the Horā carries in each classical scheme — a blank means the division is not counted in that scheme at all.

Counted in 4 of the four schemes. The more schemes a division appears in, the more the tradition treats it as load-bearing rather than specialist.
How accurate your birth time needs to be for the Horā
The Rāśi Lagna moves through a whole sign in roughly two hours, which is why the birth chart tolerates an approximate time. This division cuts each sign into 2, so the D2 Lagna moves to a new sign about an hour — and the planets near a boundary shift with it. If your recorded time is uncertain by more than that, treat the D2 Lagna and any house-based conclusion drawn from it as provisional, and rectify the time against dated life events before relying on it. Sign placements of the slower grahas stay stable much longer than the Lagna does.
How this is computed
Positions come from an astronomical ephemeris, converted to the sidereal zodiac on the Lahiri (Citrapakṣa) ayanāṁśa and computed by our own Parāśara engine — no pre-written results, and no language model anywhere near a number. Where the classical texts disagree, this page names the convention we follow instead of quietly picking one.
